This economist has nailed 11 rate calls in a row. Here’s his latest

While George Tharenou acknowledges the risk the RBA hikes next week, his base case is the central bank lifts rates by 0.25 per cent in August, once it has had a chance to see June quarter CPI numbers.

UBS Australia’s chief economist George Tharenou is on a hot streak, having correctly called every Reserve Bank rate decision since July 2022, including at least three non-consensus calls.

And now Tharenou is looking past last Wednesday’s messy monthly inflation data, predicting another pause from Governor Philip Lowe and the RBA board when they meet on Tuesday.
