The big four have bought nearly $30 billion worth of their own shares since August 2021. What happens when that buying stops?

Forget big super and index funds – the most consistent buyers of major bank shares this decade have been the banks themselves.

Since August 2021, the big four banks have announced on-market and off-market buybacks worth a combined $28.5 billion, using them to return excess capital to investors and improve return per share metrics.
