Did Minecraft just kick-start Woolworths’ turnaround?

Kids’ collectables may seem a lark to many investors. But Woolworths’ campaign has given it a hint of something it’s sorely lacked for some time: momentum. 

It’s not often that an earnings call of Australia’s biggest retailer is dominated by talk of a video game. But as Woolworths presented its March quarter trading update on Thursday, the smash hit kids’ game Minecraft was the topic du jour.

There are some fascinating parallels between the task facing new Woolies chief executive Amanda Bardwell and the mission of Minecraft players, who wander around a 3D world made of pixelated blocks, mining raw materials and building structures, earthworks and machines.
