The bankers’ pitch is that this is a convenience retailer with a fuel offering, rather a petrol station business selling chocolate bars.

If you consider 7-Eleven a fuel business, and more than three-quarters of its Australian stores sell fuel, it is hard to see anyone but one of the other big petrol station owners taking it out.

Selling fuel is a sunset industry. You can debate all you want about exactly how quickly electric vehicle uptake plays out and when exactly EVs will dominate Australia’s roads, but it is hard to deny they’re coming. And as they do, fuel retailers will sell less petrol and diesel.
