REPLAY: SA Hockey Premier League – Grange v Seacliff (Women's)

Seacliff enjoyed a victory against Grange Royals in the Premier League hockey double-header at MATE Stadium on Sunday.

The Tigers women got the club off to a perfect start with a 5-1 demolition of the Royals in the early game.

Seacliff’s men, meanwhile, led 2-0 for the first half before the Royals fought back and managed to level the game (2-0) with three minutes remaining in the match.

Both sides battled hard but were unable to net a winner.

It is Seacliff men’s second draw this season after a 2-2 stalemate with Adelaide in round two last month.

REPLAY: SA Hockey Premier League - Grange v Seacliff (Men's)

Matt Morton coaches Seacliff’s men’s and women’s teams.

Speaking after the double-header, Morton said the women’s side was impressive.

“We still had three to four players unavailable due to state commitments so for the girls to put in a quality performance is really good, considering we had some players missing,” Morton said.

“Their ability to create numerous attacking opportunities impressed me.

“Amy Hammond (for Grange) I thought played a cracking game and kept them in it.

“But the amount of attacking opportunities we were able to produce was great.”

Morton was disappointed with the men’s result, given his side had controlled the first half.

“Credit to Grange,” Morton said.

“They came back and fought from a 2-0 deficit from the first half.

“We were reflected and it wasn’t the way we would’ve liked to play.

“For us it’s about being able to stay within our system for longer periods of time and not getting caught up in the game or a certain outcome that’s happened in the moment.”

Grange coach Nathan Burgess was pleased with his side for fighting back.

“We went in very positive, the last few rounds we have been gradually building and developing,” Burgess said.

“We went into the game with an understanding we had an opportunity to win the game.

“The guys definitely performed the way I expected and we played a good game.”

Burgess credited the club’s depth for being able to switch the momentum and level the scores.

“We had a good list of interchange players this week back up to almost full strength having had players away with state commitments last week,” Burgess said.

“We had a lot more depth than they did and we managed our rotations and substitutions a bit better.

“We’ve got an attacking structure we’ve been developing over the past two years and today was one of the first times it really clicked.

“When that started to fall into place, we were able to pressure their defensive unit.”

Burgess was confident his side could turn its strong form into a win soon.

“It’s a realisation we are a competitive Premier League team,” Burgess said.

“We’ve been developing some young juniors and our style of play.

“When we play our structure well, we are just as competitive as anyone else.”
