Port Adelaide is the SA Women’s Premier League hockey champions after beating Adelaide 4-2 in the grand final at the State Hockey Centre on Saturday.
The Magpies were out for revenge after losing 2-1 in golden goal extra-time to Adelaide last year and being halted in their quest to claim an eighth-straight title win.
This year, the powerhouse club wasted no time in getting its record back on track in its 20th-straight grand final appearance.
In the match, which was exclusively live streamed on advertiser.com.au, Port set up the victory in the first half, taking a 3-0 lead into the main break.
The reigning champions fought back hard but the Magpies held on triumphantly.
Port coach Paul Finnie was proud of his side after a tough season.
“I guess we were underdogs coming in, given the results during the year,” Finnie said.
“The other two sides that made up the top three beat us leading into the finals.
“That’s what made it (the win) doubly satisfying, we came back from a bit of adversity to play our best hockey when it really mattered.
“It makes me pretty happy to see how happy the girls are, we had quite a tough month but they actually got better which is a sign of a strong group.”
Carly Simms, Leah Welstead, Jet Mallinson and skipper Sarah Harrison scored Port’s goals.
Welstead hurt her ankle early in the match only to bravely return to the field, score a goal and then be named best-on-ground.
Seacliff, meanwhile, was also out for revenge on Adelaide’s men’s side after losing last year’s top tier grand final.
And the Tigers proved too strong for Adelaide, in this year’s decider, winning 2-0.
Seacliff is becoming a force in the men’s competition, having lined up in five of the past seven grand finals, winning four premierships, including back-to-back in 2016 and 2017.
Aidan Schenk and Simon Wells netted Seacliff’s goals.
Tigers coach Dan Mitchell said his side was hungry to win following last season’s loss.
Mitchell said his team was hit with a few injuries to key players this season and triumphing in the grand final proved just how strong and connected the team was.
“It’s an unreal feeling,” Mitchell said.
“There was lots of adversity this year for the boys and to go out and get the win it’s just an awesome feeling now that it’s sunk in.
“We lost seven from the side that played in the Premier League grand final last year.
“Then we had some big outs this year to our senior players (with injuries).
“Full credit to the boys for being able to rally and get it done.
“We’ve always had some tough battles with Adelaide over the past few years but I think that just drove the boys.
“It also helped us, having that experience of a loss to actually be able to come back out this year and say ‘we know what it takes’ and we just had to go out and do it.”
The men’s match was also live streamed on advertiser.com.au.
