Now the Magpies, who claimed seven straight premierships before being stopped in their tracks by Adelaide in last season’s grand final, are out to regain their crown.
The same two sides will square off in Saturday’s SA Premier League decider, to be exclusively live streamed on advertiser.com.au at 4pm.
Port veteran Sarah Harrison, who has lined up in 20 consecutive grand finals, said her teammates were set on revenge, after losing 2-1 in golden goal extra-time last year.
“We drew with Adelaide earlier this year and then lost to them towards the end of the season,” said Harrison, ahead of the State Hockey Centre clash.
“We played really well against Seacliff in our (preliminary) final last week and had a good win, so we are looking to back that form up again.
“I think we’d be kidding ourselves if we didn’t think it was going to be tough and we are rivals.
“But we know there’s a few people who think Port Adelaide has done its dash and had our time.
“It would mean the world to our squad to win again.”
Adelaide is also vying for back-to-back men’s titles, as it comes up against Seacliff for the second grand final in-a-row.
The 6pm match will be another live streamed by The Advertiser, featuring guest commentator and Australian Kookaburra’s player Tom Craig.
Adelaide gun Shawn Dawson expected a tough test, but said his side was confident of victory.
“It’s going to take a solid performance from the boys,” said Dawson, who featured in last campaign’s success.
“I feel like we’ve been playing some really good, connected hockey over the past few weeks.
“If we keep stringing together the way we’ve been playing, we should get over the line.”
Teammate Angus Fry agreed.
“I think it’s just going to take a solid defensive effort,” Fry said.
Seacliff’s Alastair Oliver was eyeing his club’s first men’s premiership since 2017.
“The boys played well (in the preliminary final win over Port Adelaide) and it’s great to be back in the grand final,” Oliver said.
“Us and Adelaide have played in five grand finals over the past seven years.
“It wasn’t great losing to them last year, so we don’t want that to happen again.”
Oliver, who returned to action from a hamstring injury last week, said the key to winning was playing “simple hockey”.
“We don’t want to over complicate things,” Oliver said.
“It’s been a pretty tough year with COVID and we’ve had a couple of injuries.
“Our co-captain tore his PCL (in his knee) and he won’t play, so it would be good to get up for him.”
