Doughnut World Adelaide
Location: 1/474 Payneham Rd, Felixstow
This is truly what dreams are made of – there’s a Doughnut World in Adelaide.
Nestled on Payneham Rd, Doughnut World Adelaide makes 17 different varieties all lovingly curated and made by husband and wife team Wade and Tara Kelly.
Seeing a gap in the gourmet doughnut market in Adelaide, the Kellys took it upon themselves to start their business.
“Both of our backgrounds have nothing to do with food, I’m not a baker by trade but I learned and we learned and saw there wasn’t anything in Adelaide like a doughnut shop,” Mr Kelly said.
“There were bakeries doing doughnuts and things like that but no one specialising in gourmet doughnuts, so we gave it a crack.”
The business started from humble beginnings out of their home in 2019, where the couple would make and sell doughnut treat boxes.
“We just tried to start something and see whether it took off, and when Covid hit that actually boosted us because they were a delivery item and everyone was getting deliveries,” Mr Kelly said.
“We (the business) had to move out of home because we were getting too big … and then everyone wanted us to make a shop.”
And so, in 2021, the Doughnut World Adelaide store was born. The shop boasts flavours such as top seller red velvet, Biscoff, fairy bread and choc peanut butter.
“I will never say that I think our doughnuts are the best because I think out in Adelaide there are plenty of people doing good doughnuts … for me to say ours are the best diminishes everyone else’s hard work,” Mr Kelly said.
“Everyone’s tastes are different, so I hope that we make something that’s quality and that a lot of people love it and it puts a smile on their face.”
The Village Baker
Location: Burnside Village Shop 61 A and B Portrush Rd, Glenside and Shop 4, 715 South Rd, Black Forest
The secret to The Village Baker’s beloved doughnuts is that they are fluffy, buttery, and made fresh every day.
Owner of the bakery Ben Sachse said “the actual doughnut is the key”.
“What I find in a good doughnut is that it’s got to be nice and fluffy, and nice and buttery,” Mr Sachse said.
“A lot of people like to put a lot of decorations on top but I don’t like to make them too exotic, I try to keep the flavourings really simple.”
Chocolate and pink sprinkle doughnuts are the bestsellers, but for special occasions Mr Sachse said the bakery likes to mix it up and make Oreo or salted caramel doughnuts.
Brighton Jetty Bakery
Location: 83 Jetty Rd, Brighton
Brighton Jetty Bakery, who also made The Advertiser’s best Kitchener buns in SA list, also has come in on top for their doughnuts.
Owner David Matkovic said the secret to his doughnuts was the freshness.
“We bake in the morning and throughout the day rather than overnight, so when you get a doughnut at 7.30am, you’re getting a genuinely fresh product less than an hour out of the fryer,” he said.
“Our cinnamon doughnuts and blueberry pockets – a cinnamon doughnut with blueberry filling – are especially good when they’re still hot first thing in the morning.”
All the doughnuts at the bakery are vegan so everyone is able to enjoy them.

“They are soft, light and fluffy and dusted in a range of bespoke sugars made from real fruit, vegetables and spices.
“All natural and with nothing artificial; we call them the goodies with no baddies.”
On National Doughnut Day until June 4 OMG! Decadent Donuts will donate $5 from every box of 12 doughnuts sold to homeless charity Orange Sky.
