The city bakery that’s melting hearts: St Peter’s Bakehouse voted SA’s best bakery

The people have spoken! And they’ve chosen SA’s favourite bakehouse — while revealing the state’s top 10 favourites too.

It’s a long way to the top … if you want a sausage roll!

Baking has been a labour of love for Damian Obst for the past 25 years – and it even helped him find the woman who won his heart.

Now Mr Obst has won the hearts of South Australian pie, doughnut and cake lovers, with his St Peter’s Bakehouse taking out the title of the state’s favourite bakery, as voted by subscribers to The Advertiser.

“I’m very proud to know that people still love us,” said a “chuffed” Mr Obst, whose business and life partner, Kate Reynolds, joined the business 12 years ago.

“We’ve always been for the customers, it’s a very rewarding job.”

Mr Obst said customer favourites included his bakery’s chunky beef and pepper pies, carrot cake, chocolate doughnuts and the iconic – and huge – vanilla slices.

“I still love doing cakes, and the chunky pie range are always popular,” he said.

“We also do a lot of gluten free and vegan products now, which have done well.”

Mr Obst’s son, Ryan, has also joined the business, which has outlets in Thebarton, Ridgehaven and even in Noosa on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

“It’s nice to bring some of SA up to Queensland,” Mr Obst said.

St Peters Bakehouse & Coffee Shop was followed closely by North Adelaide’s Bakery on O’Connell, and the much-loved Port Elliot Bakery – famous for its extravagant ‘doughnuts of the month’ including this December’s “Peppermint Cookie”, filled with peppermint fresh cream and crushed Oreo, topped with a mind Lindt ball.
