PEOPLE’S CHOICE: TOP 10 PLACES IN SA TO SNAG A KITCHENER BUN
Brighton Jetty Bakery
Location: 83 Jetty Rd, Brighton
Brighton Jetty Bakery was one of the names on everyone’s lips when we asked readers where the best places to go for a Kitchener bun was.
Owner David Matkovic said his secret to making the iconic and exclusively South Australian treats at his bakery was making them with fresh cream.
“Making them fresh everyday is the key. The base of the Kitchener bun is a yeast doughnut so it’s light and fluffy like a bread,” he said.
“We make them fresh in the morning then roll them in sugar and then it’s a just a matter of filling them with a good amount of jam and lots of fresh cream. In my opinion, fresh cream is the only way, you can’t have mock cream.”
As well as a classic size bun, the bakery also do mini Kitchener buns and even make Kitchener bun towers to order for special events such as weddings and birthdays.
With the latest scandal on whether the Kitchener bun should be renamed due to its ties with Lord Kitchener, Mr Matkovic said changing the name wouldn’t make a difference to the product.
“Firstly I don’t think people connect it to Lord Kitchener … the product is famous, not the name,” Mr Matkovic said.
“I think people are getting up in arms about something that’s of really little consequence. If the bun is good, it’s still going to be good whether it’s called a Kitchener bun or a jam and cream doughnut.”
Mr Matkovic said if the bun were to be renamed, it should be after one of his regular customers Ivo – a man in his 90s who buys Kitchener buns every day for both himself and his wife to enjoy by the beach.
