Now, we reveal the most popular baked treats at some of your favourite bakeries - from the city and suburbs to country gems.

Whether you’ve got a sweet tooth or prefer something a little more savoury, these bakeries have something for everyone and we’ve picked out one of each you must try.

PORT ELLIOT BAKERY

Savoury: Vegan vegetable curry pie

Sweet: Peanut butter choc mudslide doughnut

This Fleurieu Peninsula bakery takes the cake with its monthly specials giving customers something new to try.

The doughnuts of the month have customers from far and wide lining up around the block.

This month’s peanut butter choc mudslide creation is sure to impress with peanut butter and nutella cream, drizzled with salted caramel and topped with mudcake.

For those after a savoury treat, August’s vegan vegetable curry pie is so good even the meat-lovers should give it a try.

CAFE DE VILI’S

When thinking of SA bakeries, the Vili’s name is one of the first that comes to mind for many locals.

The classic Berliners – whether it be jam, custard or Nutella – are the sweet winners at both of the Cafe De Vili’s locations.

When it comes to savoury, nothing can match the Vili’s meat pie which have been a South Aussie staple since Vili started making them in his Adelaide bakery in 1968.

LOBETHAL BAKERY

Savoury: Kransky

Sweet: Giant doughnuts

Size does matter at Lobethal Bakery and its giant doughnuts have quickly become a crowd favourite.

With cream-filled, honey and even chocolate with M&Ms, who could say no?

For a more reasonably sized (and savoury) snack, the Woodside bakery’s kranskies are a delicious nod to its owners’ German heritage.

Sweet: Vanilla sponge

With three shops in Angaston, Gawler and Truro, Sunrise Bakery’s goods are a staple for local families.

Its classic sausage rolls (sold warm or cold for you to take home) are popular for a light lunch or a savoury afternoon snack.

If you’re looking for a special occasion sweet, the bakery’s vanilla sponge with fresh cream and strawberries is perfect for any celebration.

NED KELLY BAKERY

Savoury: Ned Kelly pie

Sweet: Pink-topped fruit slice

It’s no surprise that this western suburbs bakery’s namesake pie is one of its most popular savoury goods.

The Ned Kelly pie is a traditional mince pie topped with bacon, a whole egg and cheese.

For sweets lovers, old-style favourite Chester Slices have made a comeback at Ned Kelly Bakery.

The popular pink-topped fruit slice will have you feeling nostalgic while digging in at the Port Road bakery and cafe.

ABBOTS AND KINNEY

Savoury: Sourdough bread

Sweet: Cruller Intentions pastry

Abbots and Kinney’s signature sourdough breads are well-known for being high quality and delicious, with the popular products making appearances on cafe menus all over Adelaide.

When it comes to sweet treats, all of the Pirie Street bakery’s pastries are top-notch.

Its cleverly named Cruller Intentions, Cinnabon-Jovi and Ugly Raspbetty pastries will have you giggling while also salivating at the sight of them.

BAKERY ON O’CONNELL

128-130 O’CONNELL ST, NORTH ADELAIDE

Savoury: Pie floater

Sweet: Cronut

Any bakery that is open all day every day already gets bonus points with us but Bakery on O’Connell’s cronuts are the real star for the North Adelaide institution.

Its cronuts (cross between a croissant and doughnut), cronut cannolis and even ice cream-filled cronut cones, have attracted an almost cult following of fans.

From the modern idea of a cronut to the classic pie floater: Bakery on O’Connell’s pies sitting on a bed of pea soup will forever be its savoury signature.

JENNY’S GOURMET BAKERY

81 GLEN OSMOND RD, EASTWOOD

Savoury: Honey crackle croissant

Sweet: Gourmet sandwiches

This eastern suburbs bakery’s croissants look so good they attract hundreds of comments on Facebook and don’t last long in store.

Their honey crackle croissant takes honey-infused custard topped with Belgium white choc and topped with honey crackles to make one of the most sought after croissants in Adelaide.

This Eastwood institution certainly has a focus on the sweets but also has gourmet sandwiches, baguettes and wraps on offer.

CHERRY DARLINGS

5 AROHA TERRACE, FORESTVILLE

Savoury: Quiche

Sweet: Caramel-filled chocolate cupcakes

A decade ago it would have been unheard of for a fully vegan bakery to make a list of Adelaide’s best bakeries.

But Cherry Darlings has made its mark and its cupcakes are drool-worthy and dairy free.

For those gluten-free bakery fans who often miss out, the gluten-free caramel filled chocolate cupcakes iced with caramel buttercream frosting and topped with cookie crumb are off the charts good.

For a savoury side, check out the Cherry Darlings quiche filled with fresh roma tomatoes, spring onion, corn and mock bacon.

BOULANGERIE 113

Savoury: Croissants

Sweet: Bronut

This French-style bakery is home to some of Adelaide’s best hybrid sweets.

The ‘bronut’ – a chocolate-iced brioche-doughnut Nutella doughnut and the cruffin (croissant muffin) filled with peach and passionfruit are a nice break from the traditional French pastries.

But if you’re feeling sweet enough already, don’t look past Boulangerie 113’s flaky croissants and 36-hour sourdough.
