Jordan Foote was born to pull on a Woodville-West Torrens guernsey.
The delisted Sydney Swans midfielder will achieve the rare feat of becoming a fourth-generation Eagle – following in the footsteps of his father, David, grandfather John and great-grandfather, Edward – when he plays for the SANFL club this year.
John and Edward both played for West Torrens, while David lined up for both West Torrens and Woodville-West Torrens.
“One of the big things that brings me to the Eagles is definitely that family connection,” says Foote, who joins Jimmy Toumpas and Jesse Lonergan as the club’s key off-season recruits.
“I think it will really sink in when I play that first game next year.
“To pull on the same guernsey that they did will be really special.”
But Foote, 23, hopes his family’s return to the Eagles is shortlived because his AFL dream still drives him.
He came through the Swans’ academy but could only manage six appearances in the red and white across four years.
A torn ligament in his foot derailed his 2018 season.
“I wanted to give myself the best opportunity to get back to the AFL and unfortunately that wasn’t in Sydney,” he says.
“After leaving Syndey I was looking at the SANFL and the VFL, but Adelaide was always my preference.
“It’s a strong league and will hopefully give me the best shot.”
Foote wants to impart wisdom learnt from the Swans’ famous “Bloods” culture.
“I’ll look to bring some experience from my time at Sydney with the culture there that is
driven by a lot of footy-hungry blokes,” he says.
“Coming to the Eagles, you can tell by the way the guys speak that they’re hungry to win.”
Eagles chief executive Luke Powell says Foote will add strength, class and speed through the midfield.
“We believe Jordan is very suited to the SANFL competition and we are excited to have such an outstanding character at the Eagles to complement our playing group,” Powell says.
Woodville-West Torrens begins its season with the highly-anticipated preliminary final rematch against North Adelaide at Woodville Oval on Sunday, March 31.
