Former Glenelg midfielder Dom Barry has spurned the chance to return to the Bay in favour of a move to an SANFL rival as three clubs land delisted AFL players.
Ex-Port Adelaide speedster Barry has joined Norwood instead of the Tigers, whom he played with last year before being drafted to the Power.
The 24-year-old’s running ability and polish should complement an already star-studded Redlegs midfield.
Port cut Barry last month after five games in one season and at least four SANFL sides were in contention for his signature.
Norwood football manager Mark Ross said the addition of Barry would add some dash to the Redlegs engine room.
“We were looking for some extra midfield run and carry and Dom certainly brings that with his experience at AFL and SANFL level,” Ross told the Norwood website.
“Dom runs the lines well he’s always creating and uses the ball really well by hand and foot.”
The Redlegs have also signed Barry’s cousin Dylan Barry – a versatile midfielder/forward – from Southern Districts in the Northern Territory Football League.
Woodville-West Torrens coach Sam Lonergan has snared a key addition by recruiting his nephew, former Gold Coast midfielder Jesse Lonergan, to Oval Ave.
Lonergan, 24, played 60 games for the Suns across six seasons and should add to the Eagles’ midfield with his work-rate and contested ball-winning ability.
Glenelg missed out on Barry but secured former junior Cory Gregson after a four-year career at Geelong.
Small forward Gregson played 39 games for Geelong before a foot stress fracture derailed his 2018 season.
He received interest from AFL clubs but it did not materialise into a lifeline.
The trio joins Luke Partington (Glenelg), Jimmy Toumpas (Eagles), Danyle Pearce (Sturt), Emmanuel Irra (South) and Will Snelling (West) in returning to the league from AFL lists.
Former Carlton and Adelaide forward Troy Menzel will also reignite his SANFL career at junior club Central District.
Matthew Wright has returned to the Crows from the Blues to captain Adelaide’s SANFL side, while Port Adelaide is expected to announce an ex-AFL 100-gamer as a replacement “marquee player” for departed Magpies skipper Steven Summerton in the coming weeks.
