GLENELG has won the race for delisted West Coast midfielder Luke Partington.
The 21-year-old former Redleg turned down offers from Norwood, Sturt and South Adelaide to commit to the Tigers today.
Partington will play for Glenelg in 2019 unless he is drafted by another AFL club next week.
He said location was a driving factor in his decision to play at the Tigers.
“Going to school at Immanuel (College), it’s the place I really wanted to live,” Partington told Glenelg’s website.
“I already have relationships with a lot of the guys here.
“It’s a great spot to come in a play footy.”
Glenelg coach Mark Stone was thrilled to have Partington at the club.
“We targeted him not only as a quality footballer with experience at AFL level, but as a kid with great character and strong values that will fit into our squad really well,” Stone said on the club’s website.
“We think he’s going to be a long-term player for us and a strong leader, who will really boost our midfield.’’
The Eagles last month delisted Partington, who played six AFL games from 2015-18.
Originally from Tumby Bay on the Eyre Peninsula, Partington was taken by West Coast with pick 28 in the 2015 draft.
All six of his AFL matches came last year and he could not break into the Eagles’ premiership side this past season despite a strong WAFL campaign.
Partington this year finished equal-first in the best and fairest of Eagles state league affiliate East Perth, along with Matthew Allan and Patrick McGinnity.
In 2018, Partington averaged 25.2 disposals and a goal in 17 matches for the Royals.
