We have approached the halfway point of the Adelaide Premier Cricket season and The Messenger has identified the top 50 players in the competition so far.
Using a ranking system of one point per run and 20 points per wicket from first grade two and one-day matches, the leading performers include recruits making huge first impressions, Big Bash players and up-and-coming stars.
1. MATTHEW SPOORS
Sturt
Points: 681
Top performance: 137 runs, 5/57 & 2/57 (round four v Prospect)
There’s been no better recruit in Premier Cricket this campaign than Matthew Spoors, who has been a huge part in ladder-leading Sturt’s terrific start.
The WA all-rounder has made a significant impact in his seven first grade matches for the Blues through a blistering first half of the season with both bat and ball.
Spoors has taken more wickets – 19 at 19.94 – than any other player in the competition and also ranks 14th for runs with 301 at 43.
The 22-year-old has compiled several top performances but the standout so far was his 137 and seven wickets as the Blues took outright points against Prospect in round four.
2. WILL BOSISTO
Adelaide University
Points: 629
Top performance: 101 runs, 2/69 (round six v Sturt)
A constant feature at the pointy end of Premier Cricket top performers lists the past two years, this season has been more of the same from the Blacks’ gun all-rounder.
Bosisto has 13 wickets but more importantly has scored the fourth most runs in the competition with 369 at 73.8.
The former Redbacks and WA player took on more responsibility this season after being handed the captaincy.
3. DANIEL DREW
West Torrens
Points: 638
Top performance: 214 not out, 2/30 (round three v Adelaide)
West Torrens captain Daniel Drew’s displays with the bat this season have been so dominant he has been almost untouchable from the top of the run-scorers in our rankings of Adelaide’s best cricketers.
The batting all-rounder was at his punishing best when he recorded a record-shattering, unbeaten 214 in a One Day Cup clash against Adelaide in November.
Drew has three tons in his competition-leading 578 runs at 144.5 and his performances have been rewarded with three Big Bash appearances for the Adelaide Strikers this month.
4. ANTUM NAQVI
Northern Districts
Points: 522
Top performance: 97 runs (round five v Tea Tree Gully)
While Sturt’s Matthew Spoors may be the recruit of the season so far, Northern Districts’ Antum Naqvi is not far behind.
The NSW all-rounder’s 262 runs at 52.4 and 13 wickets at 26.92 have been a big part in why the Jets have been a tougher opponent than they were a season ago.
5. DANIEL FALLINS
West Torrens
Points: 510
Top performance: 5/13 (round three v Adelaide)
The high-flying Eagles would not be disappointed with the performances of key signing Daniel Fallins at the halfway mark.
A former NSW Blues and Sydney Sixers leg-spinner, Fallins has claimed 15 scalps with the ball and contributed 210 runs with the bat for West Torrens.
The 25-year-old’s best display came in a One Day Cup clash against Adelaide where he took 5/13 from just 5.3 overs as the Eagles rolled the Buffalos for 118.
6. JOSH PENGELLEY
Adelaide
Points: 504
Top performance: 141 runs, 6/48 (round four v East Torrens)
It hasn’t been a great start to the season for Adelaide but Josh Pengelley is one Buffalo who can hold his head high.
The all-rounder smashed 141 from 100 balls against East Torrens in round four before taking 6/48 with the ball in a man-of-the-match performance in his side’s only victory in the opening half of the campaign.
7. KYLE SCRIMEGOUR
Prospect
Points: 495
Top performance: 136 runs, 2/67 (round five v Port Adelaide)
Newly appointed skipper Kyle Scrimegour has continued on from his terrific 2020/21 season to compile 355 runs at 44.37 along with seven wickets at 39.
While the Pirates still find themselves in the bottom half of the ladder, the all-rounder has led from the front with an impressive 136 in round five among the highlights.
8. KELVIN SMITH
West Torrens
Points: 477
Top performance: 206 runs not out (round four v Port Adelaide)
Back at West Torrens and back in the runs.
It hasn’t taken Eagles opener Kelvin Smith long to reacquaint himself with Premier Cricket’s bowling attacks, much to their displeasure.
A phenomenal, unbeaten double century – 206 from 195 balls – and another one-day ton have Smith second on the runs leaderboard with 477, second only to teammate Drew.
9. JOSH DOYLE
Kensington
Points: 464
Top performance: 97 runs (round five v Kensington)
With the Browns’ consistently strong line up it can sometimes be difficult to stand out but Josh Doyle is putting together a more than handy season.
His 304 runs is second-best for Kensington behind John Dalton and puts him 13th overall in first grade.
Plus he’s taken with eight wickets at 27.87.
10. MICHAEL CRANMER
East Torrens
Points: 456
Top performance: 154 runs (round five v Adelaide University)
It was a game which needed a monster effort and Michael Cranmer answered the call.
With his side in trouble at 3/6 against Adelaide University in round five, the East Torrens skipper patiently struck 154 from 339 balls to get them to 260 and give them a fighting chance.
The Blacks would go on to win but Cranmer’s efforts were admirable and a big part of his 316 runs at 52.66 this season to go with seven wickets.
