Record-breaking Eagles’ big weekend

West Torrens captain Daniel Drew says his record-shattering double ton was “just one of those days where everything hit the middle of the bat”.

The all-rounder belted Adelaide’s bowlers around Henley Oval with precision and power on Sunday to record a career-high 214 not out in the Eagles’ Premier Cricket One Day Cup victory.

But Drew’s remarkable innings – the highest ever one-day score for the club – was still not enough to claim the title of leading run scorer across every junior and senior grade in Adelaide this season.

That honour went to none other than his teammate, Kelvin Smith.

Smith smoked back-to-back centuries – an unbeaten 186 in a two-day clash against Port Adelaide on Saturday followed by 112 alongside Drew on Sunday – to take his season total to a brilliant 406.

Drew, who is not far behind on 398, described reaching the double ton as a “special feeling” but was even more proud of the team’s efforts.

West Torrens posted 4/408 – also a club one-day record – and bowled the Buffalos out for 118 in reply, with the skipper also taking 2/30 with the ball.

“Kelvin and Ryan Gibson got us off to a really good start then Kelvin and I both managed to reach 100,” Drew, 25, said.

“After that I put the foot down a bit, took the bowlers on and I guess it came off in the end.

“It was just one of those days where everything hit the middle of the bat, you pick the gaps and just go for it.

“I was just really pleased with the team total. To get to 400 in a one-day game is a really good effort.”

Drew’s double ton included 89 off the last 27 balls and had Eagles historian Denis Brien working overtime.

It was the highest ever individual one-day score for the club, the highest at Henley Oval, fourth-highest by a West Torrens player in any form and the most sixes (12) in a match for the Eagles.

Smith meanwhile became the first West Torrens senior player to score centuries on consecutive days, made his 15th ton for the club and claimed the title of most hundreds at Henley Oval (seven).

The team’s 4/408 total was Eagles’ highest ever one-day score, smashing the previous record of 3/351 at Henley Oval in October, 2020.

Drew hoped his performances would help him earn another First Class opportunity to add to his sole Sheffield Shield appearance in 2019.

And he believed Smith, 26, also deserved another shot.

The Eagles opener has returned to the club this season after spending the past two years in Perth in a bid to break into WA’s Shield side.

West Torrens coach Mark Harrity hoped Drew and Smith’s form would not go unnoticed by state selectors.

“Daniel’s performance on Sunday was amazing, it really was,” Harrity said.

“He made about 150 in an Redbacks internal trial against their best attack, then he captained the Second XI and made 160 not out, now he’s come out and done that.

“He’s been in some great form and he’s ready to go to be honest (at the next level).

“And Kelvin has shown how good he is.

“I think his best cricket is still in front of him and he’s another one I hope they keep and eye on. He’s only 26 and as we know a lot of cricketers peak later in their careers.”

West Torrens will resume its two-day clash against Port Adelaide this Saturday on 4/324 with Smith at the crease unbeaten on 186.
