A 15-year plan to transform a southern sports park has received the tick of approval from Onkaparinga Council.
The Aldinga Sports Park masterplan was approved by Onkaparinga Council after extensive community feedback.
The $4.71m first stage of the park upgrade – including soccer, hockey and cricket facilities and upgrades to courts and lighting – is currently underway.
The longer-term plan – now by approved by the council – includes a regional play space and skate park.
Onkaparinga Mayor Erin Thompson said the 15-year project would meet increasing demand for sport and recreation in the area.
“We received lots of constructive feedback from residents in November and December, with much of it focused on increasing greening, ensuring enough carparking, concerns about increasing traffic, user safety and adequate connections with cycling and pedestrian pathways through the site,” Ms Thompson said.
“Overall community feedback was supportive of the vision for the sports park, including the initial $4.71 million upgrade (now underway) and the longer-term vision.”
The Port Road park is next to where Aldinga’s new birth to Year 12 school – catering for 1675 students – is being built.
The council has made a shared-use agreement with the school, which is scheduled to open in 2022.
The sports park site is home to the Aldinga Football Club, the Aldinga Bay Bowling Club, Aldinga Hockey Club and the Aldinga Netball Club.
Investigations are continuing into where equestrian facilities on the site can be relocated to as works on stage one of the project continue.
Ms Thompson said work on stage one was well underway with upgrades to the netball courts more than 50 per cent complete and more updates expected in the coming weeks.
“A construction tender to build a three-lane fully-enclosed cricket net will be released in the coming weeks, after council was awarded a $30,000 grant from the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund,” she said.
“A tender for the civil, services, soccer pitch and sports lighting works is also expected in the next few months.”
