A $4.6 million redevelopment of the Aldinga Sports Park has been approved by Onkaparinga Council.
Last year, the Federal Government announced it would contribute $2.26 million to funding upgrades at the Port Rd park.
At its July council meeting, Onkaparinga Council approved funding for the remaining $2.35 million.
It is next to where Aldinga’s new birth-to-Year 12 school – catering for 1675 students – will be built.
The council has made a shared-use agreement with the school – which is scheduled to open in 2022.
“The school’s location adjacent council’s Aldinga Sports Park provides a unique opportunity to integrate planning of sports and recreation facilities to create a sports and community hub to cater for the broader southern region,” Onkaparinga Mayor Erin Thompson said.
“Council has now secured a shared-use agreement with Aldinga School to secure community use of two soccer pitches, the senior oval, and two indoor courts once the school is opened.”
The site is currently home to the Aldinga Football Club, the Aldinga Bay Bowling Club, Aldinga Hockey Club, equestrian clubs and the Aldinga Netball Club.
Ms Thompson said the project would deliver much-needed sport and recreation facilities for the region.

“This investment complements Council’s ongoing investment across our city in facilities for AFL, cricket, soccer, netball, hockey and tennis,” Ms Thompson said.
“Working with the state and federal government to support multiple sports and community clubs, we’re working together to help improve community wellbeing and connectedness for thousands of people.”
The council has started concept planning for the Aldinga Sports Park.
It will seek community consultation on the plans later this year.
