10 rapist, sexual or indecent assaulters to go through South Australian courts in 2021

From depraved aquatic centre sexual assaults to horrific rapes in broad daylight, the identities of vile sexual or indecent assaulters have been revealed.

What happens after a sexual assault?

From trusted community members taking advantage of vulnerable victims to violent attempted rapists, predators are on the rise in the state.

A police spokesperson said there was a six per cent increase in reported sexual offences in South Australia between financial years 2019/20 and 2020/21.

New data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) recorded 53,570 sexual assault offenders between 2010-11 and 2019-20, with 97 per cent of them male.

Will Milne, ABS director of the National Centre for Crime and Justice Statistics, said the proportion of sexual assault offenders with a guilty outcome who were sentenced to serve time in jail increased from 71 per cent in 2010-11 to 80 per cent in 2019-20.

“Of the sexual assault cases heard across all criminal court levels that were concluded through a court ruling, 77 per cent resulted in a guilty outcome for the defendant,” he said.

“About 76 per cent of those who had a guilty outcome in a higher criminal court were sentenced to serve time in prison, with an average sentence length of four and a half years.”

Joshua James David Slape, 23, will receive his punishment next month for his horrific acts that left one of his victims feeling “trapped and powerless”.

In the Adelaide District Court, Judge Gordon Barrett found Slape guilty of three counts of rape, two counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape.

Slape, who is in custody, stood trial in October after pleading not guilty to all six counts.

During Slape’s trial, prosecutor Emily Harper told the court Slape raped two women following celebrations at separate equestrian events in the South East.

Ms Harper said Slape, who was 19 at the time, attacked his first victim at an annual event hosted at the Slape family farm in June 2017.

After putting her children to sleep, the woman was woken by Slape walking on her swag before she was forced to perform sexual acts and then raped.

Prosecution alleged Slape also knew his second victim through the equestrian community before attacking her at the Kongorong Rodeo on January 7, 2018.

Ms Harper said Slape climbed into the woman’s swag, pulled down her shorts and underwear and then raped her.

Judge Barrett will sentence Slape next month.

Joshua Ekisa

A man attempted to rape an unconscious woman and told her it was best for her to leave because he wouldn’t be able to stop.

Joshua Ekisa’s despicable actions left the woman severely traumatised after he removed her underwear while she was sleeping.

The Adelaide District Court heard the 24-year-old man met the victim at the Sugar Nightclub in Adelaide on May 1, 2018.

“You offered to let the victim stay overnight at your house,” Judge Simon Stretton said during sentencing.

“She told you that if she went to your place nothing sexual was to happen and you agreed, pointing out that you had two separate bedrooms at your premises.”

The victim was woken up to Ekisa attempting to rape her.

“She screamed with pain and pushed you back, noting that her underwear and stockings had been removed by you,” Judge Stretton said.

The “distressed” victim left the house and was assisted by a passer-by.

Ekisa, of West Beach, pleaded guilty to attempted rape.

Judge Stretton sentenced Ekisa to seven years and nine months, with a non-parole period of five years.

The sentence was backdated to July 9, 2019.

Patrick Andrew Talbot, 67, was sentenced to a good behaviour bond in the Adelaide Magistrates Court for actions which caused fear and distress to his victim, who is more than three decades younger.

A police prosecutor told the court Talbot invited a woman to his Paradise home.

The court heard Talbot started making sexual comments after having some drinks together.

“At another stage he was blunt – he was opening his legs and looking down at his crotch and saying something like ‘don’t you want to try this’,” the victim’s affidavit read.

The court heard Talbot told the victim “I want to f*** you” before he indecently assaulted her.

Talbot pleaded guilty to indecent assault.

Magistrate John Fahey sentenced Talbot to a one-year good behaviour bond of $200. A conviction was recorded.

Nicholas Molloy

A support worker’s shift became a “night of horror” after a resident at the disability facility attempted to rape her.

Nicholas Adam Molloy, 25, was jailed in the Adelaide District Court after he changed the life of a woman forever.

The court heard Molloy was a resident at a care facility for people with intellectual disabilities.

The victim, a support worker, was working the night shift on June 20, 2020 when Molloy approached her.

“You pushed yourself against her and placed your hands around her neck firmly,” Judge Paul Muscat said during sentencing.

“You then spun her around and dragged her back towards the office, at that point she believed you were taking her there to rape and her belief was right.”

The court heard Molloy left after another resident came to the door.

Molloy was arrested and admitted in an interview he had intended to rape the support worker.

Molloy, of Murray Bridge, had previously pleaded guilty to indecent assault and assault with intent to rape.

Judge Muscat sentenced Molloy to three years and four weeks jail, with a non-parole period of 19 months.

The sentence was backdated to June 20, 2020.

William Phillip Griffiths, 67, of Hackham West, sat with his head in his hands in the dock at Christies Beach Magistrate Court after pleading guilty to three counts of indecent assault.

The court heard Griffiths, who was the Christies Beach Football Club head trainer at the time, was heavily intoxicated when he grabbed the boy’s hand and placed it on his body.

Magistrate Teresa Anderson said Griffiths told the teen he “wanted to f**k him and that you wanted him to f**k you”.

“You began behaving inappropriately towards him saying things like you liked him and wanted to (perform a sexual act on him),” Magistrate Anderson said.

Despite the teen feeling uncomfortable, Griffiths grabbed the boy, slapped his behind and pulled him towards him.

The court heard Griffiths approached the teenager again 20 minutes later in the same manner.

The teenager booked an Uber to leave the function when Griffiths followed him into the vehicle

“He pushed you away, you again touched him … and tried to pull his pants down, he kept telling you to stop,” Magistrate Anderson said.

Griffiths was sentenced to five months’ imprisonment.

Hayas Kard

A judge praised the victim of the Adelaide Aquatic Centre rapist for her courage and urged her to resume her “impressive” career, saying “we need all the strong women we can get”.

District Court Judge Liesl Chapman jailed taxi driver and former Kurdish freedom fighter Hayas Kardo for five years, ordering he serve at least 28 months before he can seek parole.

Kardo, 63, was found guilty at trial of raping a woman, 27, as she napped in a spa bath in 2018. He has never admitted the offending.

The woman fell asleep but was woken by a sharp pain as she felt the “old man” performing a sex act on her.

In her victim impact statement, the woman told Kardo she had “no room in my heart” to hate him for his “selfish, depraved act” and had opted to forgive him – for her own sake.

Allowing for the 26 months he spent on restrictive home-detention bail, Kardo will be eligible to seek parole from March 30, 2023.

Man raped his drugged girlfriend and filmed it

A man drugged his girlfriend before filming himself sexually abusing her.

The man in his 20s was charged with two counts of rape over the abuse which he filmed on the victim’s phone.

During sentencing, Judge Liesl Kudelka stated that the couple were living in a converted shed in the southern suburbs in April 2018.

The pair had been smoking methamphetamine and cannabis during the day.

The last thing the victim remembered was lying on the couch watching a movie at 11.30pm.

She woke with a pain in her groin and told her boyfriend she was in pain.

He told her they had consensual “rough” sex several times overnight – which she did not recall.

Several days later, following an argument between the couple, the victim found videos in the deleted folder on her phone.

The videos showed him sexually abusing the victim, including hitting her in the face with the mobile phone.

The man was sentenced to three years, nine months and 19 days in prison with a non-parole period of 23 months.

He will be eligible for parole in December 2023.

An attempted rapist who was addicted to methamphetamine only stopped his attack on a woman after considerable struggling.

Randall John Ross Bickley, 21, claimed he regretted his “terrifying” assault on a woman. He said was going to rape her whether she liked it or not.

Keryn Park, for the prosecution, told the Adelaide District Court Bickley misinterpreted the victim’s intentions when she came to visit him in April, 2020.

“He was persistent after she pushed him away when he tried to kiss her,” Ms Park said.

“This evolved into what became a forceful and violent attempt to sexually assault her.

“He forced her back onto the bed more than once during the incident and in the face of the victim crying and screaming for help, he then proceeded to touch her breasts and her clothing and remove her pants.”

The court heard Bickley punched the victim in the face.

Bickley, of Whyalla Stuart, pleaded guilty to assault with intent to rape.

He will be sentenced at a later date.

Kevin Brougham

A homeless man who “shamelessly exploited” an unconscious woman, raping her in the middle of the city after she offered to buy him food has been jailed for almost 4½ years.

Kevin James Brougham, 50, accepted help from the woman who bought him a Vietnamese roll and a bottle of wine in February 2020.

After the pair sat and talked at the entrance of a Mill St carpark, Brougham made an advance towards the woman who “struggled and resisted”.

Judge Ian Press said Brougham sexually assaulted the women, then waited an hour and raped and attempted to rape her while she was still unconscious.

He pleaded guilty to charges of indecent assault and was found guilty at trial by judge alone of rape and attempted rape.

Judge Press jailed Brougham for 6½ years with a non-parole period of four years and five months.

Thiessen Graham Cairns, 21, avoided jail when he fronted the Adelaide Magistrates Court for assaulting three women in July and August in Adelaide.

“Your victims in each of these assaults were young women,” Magistrate John Fahey said during sentencing.

The court heard the victim of the indecent assault was aged 15.

“You had no concern for her tender age when you placed your hand on her breast and then rubbed your hands over her clothes,” Mr Fahey said.

Cairns also assaulted two other women by slapping their bottoms.

Cairns, of Elizabeth Downs, pleaded guilty to indecent assault and assault.

Mr Fahey sentenced Cairns to four months in jail.

The sentence was suspended on a 18 month good behaviour bond for $200, with supervision for 12 months.
