Randall Bickley assaulted a woman, with an intent to rape her in Whyalla

A meth addict committed a “forceful and violent” assault on woman in an attempt to rape her, telling her he was going to do it whether she liked it or not.

What happens after a sexual assault?

An attempted rapist who was addicted to methamphetamine only stopped his attack on a woman after considerable struggling.

Randall John Ross Bickley, 21, is regretful for his “terrifying” assault on a woman, which he told her he was going to commit whether she liked it or not.

Keryn Park, for the prosecution, told the Adelaide District Court last week Bickley misinterpreted the victim’s intentions when she came to visit him in April, last year.

“He was persistent after she pushed him away when he tried to kiss her,” Ms Park said.

“This evolved into what became a forceful and violent attempt to sexually assault her.

“He forced her back onto the bed more than once during the incident and in the face of the victim crying and screaming for help, he then proceeded to touch her breasts and her clothing and remove her pants.”

The court heard Bickley then punched the victim to the face and told her what he intended on doing, whether she liked it or not.

“The defendant only ceased his assault on the complainant after considerable struggling on her part … and it was also only after she had reached a significant level of distress,” Ms Park said.

Ms Park pushed for a jail term, saying it would have been very evident to Bickley his victim was not consenting.

Bickley, of Whyalla Stuart, had previously pleaded guilty to assault with intent to rape.

Scott Roche for Bickley, told the court Bickley made the “regrettable decision” to experiment with drugs, including methamphetamine and fell into addiction.

“This was ultimately the start and downfall of a turbulent and disastrous start to Mr Bickley’s adult life,” he said.

“To assist him with his addiction issues he sought help through Mission Australia.”

The court heard Bickley had penned an apology letter to the victim and had been abstaining from drugs.

“He accepts that it’s a terrifying experience for the victim … he’s extremely regretful for his actions,” Mr Roche said.

Mr Roche asked the court to give Bickley, who has significant mental health issues, a “last chance” by not jailing him.

“Mr Bickley was an immature man and did not fully appreciate the consequences of his actions,” he said.

“He is getting his life back on track.”

Bickley’s charge was adjourned until later this month.
