Nicholas Molloy jailed for attempted rape of disability support worker at Murray Bridge

A resident at a disability facility made it a “workplace of terror” for a support worker, after he threw her onto the bed and attempted to rape her.

What happens after a sexual assault?

A support worker’s shift became a “night of horror” after a resident at the disability facility attempted to rape her.

Nicholas Adam Molloy, 25, was jailed in the Adelaide District Court on Wednesday after he changed the life of a woman forever.

The court heard Molloy was a resident at a care facility for people with intellectual disabilities.

The victim, a support worker at the facility, was working the night shift on June 20, 2020 when Molloy approached her.

“You pushed yourself against her and placed your hands around her neck firmly,” Judge Paul Muscat said during sentencing.

“You then spun her around and dragged her back towards the office, at that point she believed you were taking her there to rape and her belief was right.”

The court heard the victim called out for help.

“You threw onto the carer’s bed … you fell on top of her as you did so,” Judge Muscat said.

“You still had your hand around her throat.”

The court heard Molloy left after another resident came to the door.

Molloy was arrested and admitted in an interview he had intended to rape the support worker.

Molloy, of Murray Bridge, had previously pleaded guilty to indecent assault and assault with intent to rape.

The victim, who has worked in the disability sector for 30 years, had provided a victim impact statement to the court.

“When I think back to the evening this happened I feel totally violated, you turned my workplace into a place of terror,” her statement read.

“I’m still in disbelief that a normal night shift could become a night of horror.

“You have forever changed who I am in the way I see the world.”

The court heard Molloy, who has autism, also indecently assaulted a residential care worker at a disability housing in 2014.

Judge Muscat sentenced Molloy to three years and four weeks jail, with a non-parole period of 19 months.

The sentence was backdated to June 20, 2020.

“You will require ongoing support and close monitoring when you are released from prison,” Judge Muscat said.
