Hutt St experienced its very own sugar rush this morning as customers lined the footpaths to get their hands on tasty treats on offer at two popular dessert venues.

Mount Gambier bakery, ScRoll Queens took over Naughty Nannas Cookies to the delight of Adelaide fans, with sisters Matilda and Amelia Greenslade getting in early to secure their scroll order.

“We got here at 7am,” Amelia said.

“Our dad knows the owner and when we go on road trips we will always make a detour through Mount Gambier to go to ScRoll Queens so we had to come today.”

The girls had come with a pre-prepared list and had their eye on the “classic” cinnamon scroll smothered in sweet icing.

“We want to buy them all but we also want everyone else to experience how amazing they are,” Matilda said.

Izzy Stevens also braved the cold morning air to stand in line and after missing his bus, skateboarded all the way from Prospect to make sure he wouldn’t miss out.

The trip took him nearly two hours.

“I’ve been waiting a year and a half for this,” he said.

“I would go all the way to Mount Gambier just for one of these scrolls.”

Mr Stevens was quick to tuck into a well-deserved warm sweet chilli scroll.

“It’s so soft, so good,” he said.

170m down the road another queue was growing, with dessert-lovers lining up at The Sugar Man to catch a glimpse of celebrity chef, Adriano Zumbo as well as a taste of his indulgent sweets.

Crafers locals, Nick Bentley, Jan Tomlinson and Lara Tomlinson, locked in their prime spot in the line at 9:05am, with Jan bringing along her Zumbo cookbook ready to be signed by its author.

“We’re big fans of Adriano and The Sugar Man so this is perfect,” Jan said.

“The Sweet Assassin” Adriano Zumbo landed in Adelaide on Thursday and had been busy in the kitchen preparing his pastry menu which featured a Croquembouche Pain Suisse and a Brownie Crookie with Salted Peanut Caramel.

“It’s great to be back in Adelaide and to work with The Sugar Man,” Mr Zumbo said.

“He used to come and cook in my kitchens and now I’m here in his so it’s like a full circle moment,” he said.

Among his devoted fanbase was Alexandra Lakes who returned to the event for a second year.

“My work asked me to work today and I said no because I had to come and see Zumbo,” Ms Lakes said.

Both venues were in for a busy morning and afternoon, as hundreds of hungry customers queued down Hutt St and around the corners of side streets.
