The owner of one of Mount Gambier’s most popular bakeries – which specialises in “irresistible” scrolls – has launched a GoFundMe to help the business open a third store in Adelaide.

Owner of the cult ScRoll Queen, Dylan McQueen, launched the ‘Bring ScRoll Queen to Adelaide’ page on March 1 sharing his dream of expanding his two Mount Gambier stores into a nationwide franchise some day.

“I’m passionate about bringing the irresistible taste of cinnamon scrolls to Adelaide, Australia. With your support, I aim to open a bakery franchise called ScRoll Queen, offering the finest, freshest, and most delicious cinnamon scrolls in the country,” Mr McQueen wrote on the GoFundMe’s website.

“It (the Go Fund Me website) isn’t something I’m heaps familiar with,” Mr McQueen said.

“But it’s a nice and different way of raising capital – I don’t like borrowing money from banks.”

Mr McQueen said the hopeful Adelaide expansion has been a “long time coming” for the smash-hit bakery.

“We’ve been getting inundated with people for years asking when we’re coming to a major city like Adelaide or Melbourne, it’s always been a dream of mine.”

Mr McQueen’s scroll journey began in 2018 when he launched his business from homemade cinnamon scrolls to sell at Mount Gambier’s local farmers markets.

His products were such a hit he opened his own bricks-and-mortar shop on the outskirts of Mount Gambier near the Blue and Valley Lakes and despite the store’s grand opening taking place during the height Covid in 2020, the business was a smashing success.

ScRoll Queen opened its second Mount Gambier store in November last year, located on Crouch Street South, a more central location compared with his original site at Moorak.

While Mr McQueen’s initial focus was producing the sweetest and most “irresistible” cinnamon scrolls, his products have expanded over the years to include a variety of sweet, savoury, and filled pastries.

Mr McQueen told The Advertiser before opening his second store he was developing a blueprint for how he wanted other outlets to look “in terms of branding, and style and just overall as a franchise”.

Now Mr McQueen is ready to bring his dream of expansion beyond Mount Gambier to fruition – but assures locals the beloved Mount Gambier stores aren’t going anywhere.

“That would never happen!” Mr McQueen said in response to a concerned commenter on Facebook who begged the ScRoll Queen to not leave the Mount like other businesses have in the past.

“Mount Gambier is the birthplace and home of ScRoll Queen,” he added with a wink and heart emoji.

“While (the expansion) is still in it’s very early stages, I have been talking to a couple of real estate agents in Adelaide about potential locations,” Mr McQueen said.

“It has to be somewhere well-established in the Adelaide food scene, accessible for both travellers wanting to get our stock and also people on their daily commute.”

Mr McQueen said some of the places he has considered include Melbourne Street in North Adelaide, Glenelg and The Parade in Norwood but nothing is set in stone yet.

“I feel that when the right place pops up we’ll know.”

Mr McQueen said he’s aware some people might perceive the GoFundMe as a “cheap” way to get money from people but he’s hoping the fundraising will “create a family” among ScRoll Queen staff and fans.

“The people who want (the move) are able to help make it happen,” he said.

He’s aiming to organise “fundraiser packages” as a thank you for people who donate.

“We haven’t fully nutted it out yet, but we’re hoping to organise some kind of loyalty card or reward system for people who help us on this journey.”
