Sugar & Spice Cakes in Goodwood has taken the cake after voters selected them as the best cake maker in South Australia.
When notified of the good news, owner, Amanda Forth-Piper squealed with excitement.
“We were overwhelmed with all the people voting for us and emailing and calling to let us know they had voted, it really brought a smile to our faces,” Ms Forth-Piper said.
“The cakes we make are edible art and so many hours go into them, so to receive this nomination and now this win has really meant so much to us all.”
While Ms Forth-Piper’s passion for cakes has only grown since opening her store more than 20 years ago, she acknowledges the “tough slog” that is associated with owning a small business.
“With Covid and the cost of living crisis and everything going on at the moment it is hard,
“We know that we sell a luxury item and we are so grateful to our customers whose milestones we are a part of,” she said.
Ms Forth-Piper urged consumers to consider supporting local bakeries and cake-makers ahead of supermarket alternatives, particularly during this difficult time.
“We have got to support local or else us small businesses and micro family businesses won’t stay standing,
“I’m a bricks and mortar store and us little guys need customers or it will become a monopoly of the big guys,” she said.
With in-store baker Emily currently working on a 3D snake cake, Ms Forth-Piper said that her team of talented cake-makers take on new challenges every week.
“We once did a replica of Will and Kate’s wedding cake and that took all the staff working on just that cake for a whole week,” she said.
