South Australia’s best cake maker 2023 revealed

From humble beginnings baking as a “side hustle” to running a booming business born from a personal grief journey, meet the talented baker crowned SA’s best cake maker.

A desire to follow her heart and pursue a “true passion” was the catalyst for the start of the popular cake making business Megs Makes.

The home baking venture has been so popular, in fact, Megs White has been crowned SA’s best cake maker, as voted by readers.

Her themed custom cakes and award-winning desserts have captured the attention of people from all over the state and her social media pages have thousands of followers.

The rise in popularity came from humble beginnings, with Megs baking as a “side hustle” just to earn a little bit of extra money.

However, in 2020, Megs’ life was flipped upside down and it sparked a change in her attitude towards her working life.

Megs doesn’t shy away from her personal grief journey that led her to make baking her full-time job.

“Three years ago, I lost my son to suicide – when that happened, as with any sort of loss, it just makes you evaluate what it is that you are doing with your life and what is important,” she said.

“The cake side of things had always been a passion but I was working full time … when we lost Logan, it was just like, nah life is too short, I need to do what makes me happy.

“That was it, I quit corporate life and have been making cakes ever since.”

And now, Megs is enjoying working from her Hallett Cove home she shares with husband Cameron and son Ryder.

The self-taught baker said she was always learning and improving as her business continues to grow.

Having finished second in last year’s SA best cake maker voting, Megs said she was thankful for the support of her customers and clients and always looks forward to new challenges when it comes to baking.

She lists her favourite cake flavour as white chocolate mudcake and favourite macaron flavour as lemon cheesecake.
