Hügel Wine Bar and Kitchen has officially shut after almost five “unforgettable” years on Main Road at Lobethal, with its owners revealing the news on social media.
“We’ve made the decision not to renew our lease. While this decision wasn’t easy, it feels right as we move into the next chapter of our lives,” they captioned a photo on Instagram.
“Over the years, we’ve weathered bushfires, navigated the uncertainty of COVID, and built a community I couldn’t be more proud of. From couples falling in love and getting married to celebrating new babies and lifelong friendships, Hügel has been a place filled with so much love, joy, and connection.
“Hügel has been more than just a bar and restaurant—it’s been a home.
“Together, we’ve shared countless laughs, celebrated milestones, and supported one another through the highs and lows.
“I’ve been deeply touched by the relationships and memories created within these walls, and I am endlessly grateful for everything this community has given me.”
Joshua Kleemann launched Hügel, a small, 20-seater venue in December 2019, on the site of a former 1950s bank.
The eatery’s menu featured share plates and snacks with a focus on seasonal Hills produce, plus an eclectic wine list including various spirits.
Originally from Lobethal, Mr Kleemann chose the venue’s name as an homage to his family’s German heritage.
“Thank you to each and every one of you who has supported Hügel and been part of this journey,” the Instagram post said.
“Your friendship and loyalty have meant the world to me, and I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved together. Here’s to new beginnings and the beautiful memories we’ve created. With gratitude, Josh & the Hügel Team.”
