The Man from Snowy River producer Geoff Burrowes lists Mt Skene Estate for sale

Mt Skene Estate, owned by the producer of the iconic film The Man from Snowy River, has hit the market for millions.

‘Extraordinary price changes’ in the housing market warrant ‘prudent’ lending

There is movement at Mt Skene Estate near Merrijig.

The producer of Australian movie The Man from Snowy River has called Mt Skene Estate home for almost 40 years, a grazing property which has all the charm of a film set but with productivity to boot.

Geoff Burrowes and his wife Kerri chose the property, with both having a strong affinity with the area.

For Geoff, it was long before he used the region to film The Man from Snowy River, as he came to visit the area to ride horses and learn bush skills with the Lovick family.

He fell in love with the area, but also its people, and when he married Kerri Lovick, they set about creating all that is Mt Skene Estate.

.

The property has been used to breed Hereford cattle which has largely been the domain of Kerri, who has divided her time between stock work and creating a stunning garden which surrounds the homestead.

Geoff paid tribute to Kerri, who he said had no formal training in garden design but had instinctive knowledge of how to create something stunning which offered different vistas regardless of the season.

“When we moved here, it was a very nice property, with a two-bedroom cottage and no gardens,” Geoff said.

“Kerri has created a large garden, all of which is her design and most of which is her work.”

And it’s no surprise that the house, which sits in a natural amphitheatre was designed by the art director of the movie, Leslie Binns.

.

“The house was designed so you could see through rooms, from one side of the garden and out through to the other side – it’s a feature which keeps you focused on what is growing outside and is calming,” Geoff said.

The house has been extensively renovated recently and features five bedrooms and three bedrooms. It has three metre ceilings, double glazing, hydronic heating and of course, spectacular views.

The established gardens which surround the residence include a salt water pool and a tennis court.

.

Farm improvements include a cottage, cool room, machinery shed, workshop, two-stand shearing shed, cattle yards and, of course, horse boxes and a tack room.

The proximity of Mt Skene Estate to the bush was a key feature that the Burrowes enjoyed, using the property as a base to days-long rides with their family.

Geoff said they had raised their four children at Mt Skene Estate, and the affinity that they, too, had with the district was strong.

“We haven’t just had a fantastic lifestyle here, we’ve had a fantastic life,” he said.
