RCH saved April Anderson’s daughter; now she’s giving back
Juggling a dairy farm and a sick child is a challenge no parent should face alone. April Anderson shares her story to highlight the importance of the Good Friday Appeal.
Rochester dairy farmer April Anderson knows first-hand the vital importance of the Royal Children’s Hospital.
When her six-year-old daughter Hazel developed complex appendicitis in February, local health services lacked the specialised pediatric resources needed.
A mercy flight to Melbourne followed, where Hazel underwent emergency surgery at the RCH.
“As soon as we got there, you knew you were in the best care,” April said.
Hazel’s burst appendix required a second operation just eight days later.
“They were so good – the doctors and nurses work around the clock,” she said.
“One of Hazel’s operations was on a Sunday and the other was at 11pm at night and the same doctor was at both – they are incredible.”
Ronald McDonald House provided invaluable support, allowing April’s mother to stay nearby.
Juggling her daughter’s care with the demands of running a 120-cow dairy farm solo was a daunting challenge.
April relied on the support of her parents and brother back in Rochester while navigating the unfamiliar city.
Even Hazel’s school is getting involved, organising a fundraiser to contribute to the cause.
“You don’t realise until you experience the RCH how important it is,” April said.
“Please donate – kids need it.”
