Wangaratta mum runs for the kids in Good Friday Appeal
You never know when you’ll need the expertise at the Royal Children’s Hospital - Wangaratta’s Alex Hamlyn is testament to that.
Wangaratta’s Alex Hamlyn “never thought in a million years” she would need the Royal Children’s Hospital - until she did.
Alex will run for both her daughters Lacey and Holly Hamlyn in The Herald Sun/Transurban Run for the Kids on April 6 to help fundraise for the Good Friday Appeal, and to help give back to the hospital that has given so much to her family.
Both Lacey, 5, and Holly, 3, were born with a rare genetic condition Pierre Robin Sequence and spent the first few years of their lives receiving life saving surgery and care at the RCH.
“I owe so much to this hospital and will never be able to put into words my appreciation,” Alex said.
“Both my girls are a credit to the hard-working doctors and nurses and I will never forget each and everyone of them who worked so hard to give them a normal life.”
While admitting to being “a horse rider, not a runner”, Alex has challenged herself to run 4.7km in under 30 minutes at the fun run and said her girls would be there to watch her cross the finish line.
“It’s something close to my heart - we wouldn’t have our girls without the hospital, it’s as simple as that,” Alex said.
A portion of funds raised in the appeal will go towards regional and rural health services again this year.
“We would often leave at 5am to get down to Melbourne for appointments so it would definitely benefit families going through the same thing if some specialists were available locally,” Alex said.
“I never thought in a million years I’d be going to the Royal Children’s Hospital with my children but when you do you are just so grateful for everything they provide.”
