6.30pm TIME TO CALL IT A DAY

Dogs across Australia

LIFE as a dog is hard work, so sleep is important.

Just ask Vita, 7, a Border Collie-Kelpie Cross rescue dog.

Her owner Janet Barker was mulching in the garden at Castlemaine but it was all too much for Vita.

“I was mulching the garden with a big bale and she thought it was a pretty comfy spot to lie in the sun — supposedly helping me in the garden,” Janet says.

Well, it is time to call it a day for Day of Dogs. We have been overwhelmed by the response this year and want to thank everyone who was involved — there is a lot of love for our canine companions out there.

Scroll down for some of the highlights of the day, or check out our gallery of Day of Dogs 2016.

Sleep tight everyone!

5.50pm DOGS LEARNING NEW TRICKS

Zoe and Murphy, Sydney

Gayle Daniels and Ed O’Shea live in Sydney’s inner west and have two five-year-old Spoodles, Zoe and Murphy. Check out what they can do in this video of them demonstrating their tricks at a camp in Barrington Tops.

“We always try to make sure we have some pretty cool tricks for their trick competitions,” Gayle says. “I like to check out local collectors markets in Rozelle (Sydney) looking for interesting props.”

She said the dogs also compete in agility competitions and Murphy has already earned his first title.

5.40pm: LAZY BONES

Orsa, Melbourne

“BUT I don’t want to go!”

Chow Chow Orsa, 2, loves the park so much sometimes she doesn’t want to leave.

“She loves walks but she’s also very lazy, and her legs aren’t that long, so we often have to stop on our walks,” her owner Felicity Giuliani says.

“She loves to play in grass so combine the stubborn temperament of the Chow and the fact she’s a little tired gives you this video.”

Felicity said her full name is Orsa minore, which means little bear in Italian.

5.17pm: NOW WE’RE COOKIN’

Maisie, Eddington, Vic

THERE’S no denying dogs love a warm spot in the sun, to curl up in front of the fire or snuggle under the blankets in winter. But some dogs have another option — the bottom of the AGA stove.

Jules Nixon was minding Kelpie pup Maisie, of Eddington, while her owners were on holidays last winter.

“She’d really got to the point where she’d outgrown the plate warmer, but Maisie still stuffed her body in there,” Jules says.

“On this particular day, the oven was about 250 degrees and I really was quite concerned she’d bloody die in there, so, I dragged her out by the back legs — felt a little like the oven was giving birth.”

“I later put the door back on the plate warmer — didn’t want to ‘bust’ their dog on my watch!”

Jules says Maisie has since matured into a “wonderful dog” and there “appears to be no long term affects from her oven experience.”

4.52pm UNLIKELY FRIENDS

Dave, Bethanga, Victoria

KELPIE Dave, 4, is a “great lover of, and loved by, all creatures”, according to Philippa Packer.

Dave lives on Philippa’s parent’s beef cattle property at Bethanga in North East Victoria and loves to sing and spends hours licking his “adoring companions, including cattle”, she says.

One of Dave’s best friends is Cecil. When Cecil was a baby calf, Dave was his dedicated “fitness buddy”.

“They met every morning to go for a run around the perimeter of the paddock, shoulder to shoulder at a nice steady cantering pace,” Philippa says.

And while it might seem like an unlikely friendship, Dave has befriended Archie the wether.

“Archie prefers quieter pursuits, but loves Dave just as much, which is mutual,” Philippa says.

4.20pm LEARNING THE ROPES

Diva, Woodstock, Queensland

HERE’S some more information shared with us about a video below originally sourced from Instagram (see 2.33pm post).

Wayne Flintham shot this video of his young sons Hayden, 4, and Rylan, 6, working a dog on sheep for the first time.

The dog is 15-month-old Border Collie, Diva. She only has one eye from an accidental kick to the head resulting in the eye being removed.

Wayne says they are at CSIRO Lansdown Research Station in Woodstock, a beef research property.

The dogs are started on sheep and upgrade to cattle at a later stage. Diva is already working cattle.

4.11pm CAMERA-LOVING PUP

Jack, Mildura, Vic

All is forgiven: Vicki says Jack and his sister Lucy are very naughty, but because they’re so cute they can get away with almost anything.

BASENJI puppy Jack loves the camera, whether it’s being in front of the lens or behind.

“Jack just loves it, he even likes to ‘help out’ by offering to carry my camera,” his owner Vicki Kendrigan, of Mildura, says.

His sister Lucy is a bit camera shy, but according to Vicki they are “besties”.

“They do absolutely everything together,” she said.

3.27pm: DOG SITTING

Tully, Warrion, Vic

IT CAN be hard to find a good dog sitter, but Sarah Chant, of Warrion, might have found the perfect one for her Kelpie pup Tully.

“She was just being a nuisance one day as a pup so we popped her up there and left her there for a while. [It] was safer on top of a cow rather than under it,” Sarah said.

As it turns out Myra, the cow, was a great pup sitter, according to Sarah.

Tully is now five years old and Sarah says she is her “right-hand girl”.

3.17pm: TIME FOR A SWIM

Dogs all over Australia

SO DOGS love getting into the water, and who doesn’t love that wet dog smell?

It’s a win-win situation!

Case in point: Louie is a Kelpie with a bit of Coolie and Rottweiler.

He’s from Bendigo and loves going for a swim in Bluejacket Dam at Whipstick State Park, also in Bendigo.

2.33pm: INSEPERABLE PAIR

Diva, Woodstock, Qld

WATCH Hayden, 4, and Diva, the Border Collie 15 months, hard at it mustering sheep!

What an impressive performance by a dog and a boy who seem to be made to work together.

Here are some other Instagram highlights:

1.58pm: NOT JUST FOR SHOW

Stella and Emperor, Gorae, Vic

THEY might not be your standard working dog breed but Stella and Emperor the Neapolitan Mastiffs love the farm just as much as any Kelpie or Border Collie, writes XAVIER DUFF.

“Stella (3) and Emperor (5) are seasoned ‘ute dogs’ from Portland, Victoria, who like to supervise the daily farm duties from the back of the ute,” owner Kylie Walford says.

“We run cows and calves on a 45-hectare farm in the high rainfall area of Gorae sheltered by the Cobboboonee National Park.

“Stella and Emperor enjoy moving the rowdy calves from paddock to paddock, fencing and paddock renovations all in a supervisory role off the back of the farm ute.

“When they are not getting their paws muddy on the farm they are being prepared and presented for conformation showing, both titled Australian Champions.”

12.35pm: PLAY TIME ON THE FARM

George and Tilli, Nhill, Vic

FARM life isn’t a case of all work and no play for this pair.

George, the golden Labrador, and Tilli, the black Labrador, have a ball playing in the lentils on their Pohlner family’s property at Nhill.

Alice Pohlner, a journalist at The Weekly Times, says George is a sheep dog at heart and likes to help his dad with the farm work. Tilli likes hunting rabbits, receiving pats and having naps in the garden.

11.45am CHIPPING IN AT WORK

Molly and Sid, Jancourt East, Vic

MEET Blue Heeler Molly and Kelpie Sid, who belong to agronomist Caitlin Wynne from Jancourt East, Victoria. The dogs go out on the job with Caitlin every day.

The photo of Molly was taken while inspecting Caitlin’s boss’s oat crop in Naringal East, Victoria.

“Molly is my shadow and loves going wherever I am going, especially if there is an opportunity to roll in some mud or eat something inappropriate,” Caitlin says.

One photo of Sid was taken outside Caitlin’s office at work. “He was listening in on a work meeting and obviously thought it was pretty boring,” she says.

The other photo was taken on Caitlin’s property, Tyalla at Jancourt East. Caitlin says Sid had only just learnt he could jump from bale to bale and showing off.

Chipping in around the farm — or just coming along for the ride — is what these dogs love to do.

Sam, Cobden, Vic

BORDER Collie Sam, 3, is just like one of the family, says owner Kerry McGlade.

“This is a picture of our three boys,” Kerry says.

“He’s just like one of the family and we love him.”

He is pictured with his “brothers” Josh, 12, and Ben, 10.

“He loves coming inside in the morning to jump on their beds and wake up Josh and Ben,” Kerry says.

8.44am: LET’S PLAY!

Billy, West Footscray, Vic

BILLY the Blue Heeler is the funniest little fella, who is always happy and on the lookout for someone to have a game with him and his favourite ball, his Sherrin.

“We got Billy two years ago from a Melbourne rescue group who saved him from a pound up near Mildura,” owner Andrea Beattie says.

“He’s always up for a game and loves cooling down in the muddiest puddles he can find — we call him the Australian Cattle Duck when he does that.”

Mr Photogenic, Billy even has his own Instagram account, @BillyTheBlueHeeler!

Already, submissions are pouring in via our email address and various social media accounts, including from as far away as California, US:

6.30am: OFF TO WORK WE GO

Lucy, Ivy and Charlie, Bridgewater, Vic

ZEB Broadbent is a stock agent from Bridgewater and says his Kelpies come to work with him every day.

In fact, he says they get annoyed if they are left behind.

“Some days I mightn’t use them at all, but they still come,” he says.

“They just love riding around on the back of the ute — except when it’s raining, it’s too cold for them.”

Zeb lives on his family’s sheep and cropping farm about 10km outside Bridgewater.

He has five working dogs — two-year-old Lucy, 18-month-old Ivy, six-month-old Piper, five-month-old Barry, and 10-year-old Charlie. Charlie was Zeb’s first dog and she is semi-retired.

Zeb says Lucy and Ivy came from WilWurk Kelpies in NSW, while Piper is from Hilton Park Kelpies in Bears Lagoon, Victoria.

6.30am: BREAKFAST TIME

Kelpie puppies, Pilbara, WA

HERE’S some puppy cuteness to start your day.

Aticia Grey posted this video on her Facebook page, Pilbara Working Dogs, of pups tucking into their breakfast.

And just like human babies, the question is how much ended up in their tummies versus all over their faces and paws.

Aticia is from Glenforrie Station in the southwest Pilbara, WA.

The family-owned and run cattle station is 197,000ha and currently holds 4000 head of cattle, mostly Brahmans.

Aticia said she had 20 dogs at the moment, including the seven pups who turned four weeks old yesterday — she will keep two of the puppies in this litter and the other five already have homes to go to across Australia.

She said the dogs help educate the weaners on the station, but she is also a registered breeder.

“There seems to be a lot of interest in how working dogs live and work and what they can do,” she said of the Facebook page.

“It lets me connect with a lot of other people with working dogs across the place.”
