THE 2020 spring bull selling season has proved the perfect time for new studs to launch their first sale and other studs to expanding their businesses.

In their first annual bull sale the Bowman Performance Genetics stud in Neerim South sold 58 bull to full clearance for a top of $10,500, averaging $5958 for 47 Angus bulls and $4320 for 11 Hereford bulls.

“We were really happy with the clearance,” Stud principal Glenn Bowman said.

“Being our first year it important to get the bulls out there and letting people know how well they perform.”

Mr Bowman said buyers in attendance commented on the consistent line up of all 58 bulls which presented in favour of the bumper season underway.

“Lots of people commented on the evenness of the line and the grass fed point of difference which adds to the longevity of the bulls,” he said.

The Cluden Newry Angus stud at Longford, Tasmania sold 20 of 22 Angus bulls to a top of $11,000 and averaged $7775.

Cluden Newry stud principal Jock Hughes said a combination of the cattle market, the season and two years building a solid client base for their yearling bulls almost doubled their average price of $4000 from their first yearling bull sale last year.

The stud holds their main sale in the autumn for the 18 to 20-month-old bulls but has begun offering yearling bulls in Spring.

“I think the benefits of using yearling bulls are becoming more accepted in the cattle industry now,” Mr Hughes said.

“The main advantage of using them at a younger age is you’re generally keeping the weight off them throughout their lifetime which increases their working life by being lighter.”
