CONFIDENCE in the cattle industry has pushed average bull prices up by $4000-$6000 on last year’s results, at some leading studs last week.

Three major Angus sales saw their average prices leap lsignificantly higher last week, while results have been up across the board in southern Australia’s bull sales.

Analysis by The Weekly Times of a number of key stud sales last week showed average prices were higher by up to $6000. Dunoon Angus at Holbrook, NSW, recorded an impressive top price of $140,000 at last week’s sale, which saw all 115 bulls sold for 100 per cent clearance.

The average price across the sale was $12,434, up on last year’s average price of $6491.

In NSW, Wirruna Poll Herefords stud principal Ian Locke said all but one of the 62 bulls offered at last week’s sale sold, with an average price of $7795 and top price of $32,000. “We had better clearance this sale compared to the autumn bull sale, and a bigger top price. The commercial guys are really coming out, they were very solid,” Mr Locke said.

“There’s no doubt in my discussions with clients they really have their tails up, they have confidence in the industry, and that’s also backed up by our female cattle numbers being so low.”

Rennylea Angus co-stud principal Ruth Corrigan said the family were “overwhelmed” by their result, which also recorded 100 per cent clearance rate for the 157 bulls offered.

“It was an amazing sale, average prices were about $1800 higher than our last best sale.”

The sale recorded an average price of $12,509 and gross earnings of $1.96 million. Top priced bull, Rennylea Q1027, sold for $30,000.

Gilmandyke Angus had record breaking prices for both their average and top price received at their on-property sale in Orange, NSW last week. Selling 59 bulls to full clearance for an average of $9306 and a top of $18,000, Gilmandyke stud manager Wade Peatman said the sale was up $4034 on their average from last year and “about $1000” up on their previous highest average.
