Penny for Pound bakery (and its lockdown pies) return at new Richmond location
Richmond artisan bakery Penny for Pound recently relocated from its original home at the rear of Mayday cafe after having to issue a mayday of its own when an offer was made on the Lord Street building.
“We were homeless for a couple of weeks and couldn’t tell anyone what was happening because we weren’t even sure yet,” says pastry chef and co-owner Matilda Smith.
The seven-year-old business found a vacant bakery site 30 metres away on Bridge Road, and reopened in the suburb within eight weeks, to the relief of its regulars.
The new site comes with plenty of upsides, including street frontage for the first time, and space for a coffee machine, which uses Axil beans.
The larger space means a wider range of baked goods, including the comeback of pies and sausage rolls, a lockdown offering that’s now permanent.
Beef bourguignon or Mexican bean pies, plus pork, fennel and apple sausage rolls are on offer, alongside signature pastries such as twice-baked red velvet croissants.
There’s no kitchen to prepare the cafe-style meals available at Penny for Pound’s Moorabbin HQ, but there are cakes available whole or by the slice, such as carrot cake or double-baked chocolate, perhaps enjoyed at one of the outdoor tables.
It’s a similar set-up at the third Penny for Pound location in Camberwell, which has occupied a handsome triangle-shaped building since spring.
