Man in custody after alleged armed robbery at Lutana United Petroleum

A man accused of using a weapon to demand cigarettes and cash from a service station attendant has been charged with armed robbery.

A MAN accused of using a weapon to demand cigarettes and cash from a service station attendant has been charged with armed robbery.

The 33-year-old New Town man allegedly entered United Petroleum on the Brooker Highway at Lutana about 6.30pm on Saturday.

Tasmania Police said the man left the service station empty-handed after the worker was able to activate an emergency alarm.

“After spending some time inside the premises he approached an employee, produced a weapon and demanded cigarettes and money,” the police statement read.

“The service station employee successfully activated an emergency alarm and took some personal safety measures. The offender left the store without further incident.”

The alleged offender was expected to appear in an after-hours court session last night.

Police thanked the public and local business for their assistance during the investigation.
