A Territory cop who allegedly tried to pressure a domestic violence survivor to not give evidence against him may still avoid a Supreme Court trial.
Karol Adam Jarentowski waited in the crowded public gallery of the Darwin Local Court before Chief Judge Elizabeth Morris on Wednesday, charged with breaching a domestic violence order and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
The 39-year-old police officer was suspended with pay after allegedly assaulting a woman in Palmerston last year.
The court has previously heard the 39-year-old officer was accused of throwing a child’s T-shirt at a woman, hitting her in the back of the head on August 2, 2024.
This was allegedly in violation of an undertaking he made a month earlier, promising to the court not to harass or behave in a threatening manner.
Less than 60 days after this incident, Jarentowski allegedly tried to intimidate and coerce a witness into withholding evidence against him.
He was charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice and the breach in relation to an incident on September 28.
On Monday his defence lawyer Thelma Gray said there was still a possibility of avoiding the Supreme Court.
Ms Gray said she was in “negotiations” with prosecutors to resolve the matter, and required a further four week adjournment to March 26.
Ms Morris agreed to the new date, but warned there would be no further delays in this case.
“If it’s not negotiated then, it needs to proceed to go to the Supreme Court,” she said.
As of this month Jarentowski was still suspended from active duties, but remains on the police payroll.
