King and La Trobe St intersection camera nabbed most speeding drivers last financial year

A speed camera in Melbourne CBD was the city’s top-grossing cash cam, nabbing tens of thousands of speeding motorists in one year. This is where it is.

Tricky road rules you're probably breaking

Leadfoot motorists were slugged more than $320 million in fines over the last financial year as speed cameras caught out hundreds of thousands of Victorians across the state.

Newly-released figures show a camera at the intersection of King and La Trobe streets nabbed the most offenders and issued 38,705 infringements over the space of 12 months.

The camera was installed early in 2018 and since then has soared to the top of the list.

The top four cameras were all located within 40km/h zones while another four in the top 10 were positioned at different parts of the Princes Freeway.

Assistant Commissioner Libby Murphy, of the road policing command, said Victoria Police were cracking down on road safety over the festive season.

“It’s been a challenging year on our roads, sadly too many families are mourning the loss of a loved member of their family,” she said.

“Many people will be heading off on weekends away or holiday trips so I urge them to take care, don’t be in a rush and to plan ahead.

“If you have a long drive or know you’ll be travelling on unfamiliar roads, plan ahead and take regular breaks – share your driving and make sure you’re an active passenger in the car, be an extra set of eyes for the driver.

“We don’t want to be knocking on anyone’s else’s door to deliver a message that will change their lives forever.”

Bulla Rd in Bulla, the Great Ocean Rd in Lorne and Ballarat Rd in Footscray were the three locations where police with mobile cameras issued the most fines.

Another 223,000 drivers were handed infringements on-the-spot while 648,000 fines were issued for tolling disputes.

In total, 2.1 million fines were sent out across the state while another 91,372 were listed as official warnings.

It comes after issues with Fines Victoria sucked millions of dollars from the State Budget.

Technical difficulties with the trouble-plagued system have seen incorrect fines issued while thousands of others were not being claimed.

Former police chief commissioner Ken Lay is currently chairing a review into the system.
