New speed camera in CBD now busiest in Victoria

A new Melbourne speed camera has overtaken the infamous Warrigal and Batesford roads intersection as Victoria’s busiest by issuing almost 11,800 fines in three months. Here’s where the state’s top 10 speed cameras are located.

The Aussie road rules you've never heard of

A new speed camera in Melbourne’s CBD now issues more fines than anywhere else in the state, with more than 100 motorists pinged at the hotspot every day.

Traffic statistics show a camera at the intersection of King and La Trobe streets, which was installed in February, has overtaken a notorious Chadstone road for recording the most infringements over three months.

From July to September last year, the device raked in $2.6 million from 10,796 offences.

A camera at the intersection of Warrigal and Batesford roads in Chadstone — infamous for being the state’s busiest camera over the past three years — was ranked second and had 8000 fines over the same period.

The top four cameras in Victoria were all located within 40km/h zones, with more than 200,000 speed fines issued to motorists travelling less than 10km/h over the limit.

But Department of Justice and Regulation spokeswoman Ashleigh Brown said the figures for the CBD spot were improving as motorists changed their behaviour. “Speed cameras play a critical role in changing driver behaviour and helping keep people safe on our roads,” she said.

“It’s still disappointing that more than 10,700 motorists decided to risk lives and risk causing serious life-changing injuries to themselves and others by speeding or running a red light.”

Overall, the total number of speeding and red-light offences rose to 305,758, an increase of more than 22,000.

Victoria Police spokesman Martin Kay said cameras saved lives and had contributed to the state’s lowest road toll on record.

“If we as a community agree that we lose too many lives on our roads, then we need to make tough decisions around exceeding the speed limit,” he said.

“People make conscious decisions around driving a motor vehicle on a highway and they need to be held accountable.

“Driving on our roads is a shared responsibility, everyone needs to be aware of their surroundings and environmental conditions and that also means driving within the speed limits.”

“The long term trend shows a downward trend in the number of fines being issued since the camera system began.”
