Shocking feedback from over 100 Mona visitors has been made public as the museum reveals it’s received more one-star reviews than the Louvre.
Despite the owner of Mona’s ‘disdain for advertising’ the move has formed part of the museum’s latest ad campaign which takes the mickey out of David Walsh’s own creation.
Reviews such as ‘My wife’s asthma played up big time’ and ‘I paid to watch a machine take a dump. Jokes on me’ have been paired with images of unenthused patrons and plastered on billboards across Victoria and New South Wales.
The campaign is also being rolled out on TV, in cinema and social media.
Following the Museum of Old and New Art’s 10th anniversary and Covid shutdown, Mona’s Head of Creative Jardin Anderson said although the campaign may be counterintuitive, it was interesting to push differing opinions back on the general public.
“Art, food, beer, wine, architecture and music are all things that are super subjective and personal, so it’s not surprising that people have opinions,” she said.
“Luckily we believe that all opinions are valid. So valid, in fact, that we’d put them up on a billboard on Parramatta Road.’
Director of Marketing and Communications Robbie Brammall said The Best of Our Worst Reviews campaign highlighted some of the venue’s most colourful criticism from the past decade.
“Mona gets more one-star reviews than the Louvre, with less than 10% of the visitation,” he said.
“David loves that stat. We also get more five-star reviews, but in his mind that’s a less noble metric.”
As part of the campaign T-shirts, tote bags and an AR Instagram filter featuring one-star Mona reviews will become available in late March.
