A NEW luxury hotel near Hobart’s waterfront - where a presidential suite will cost $5000 a night - has started taking bookings as Tasmania heads into what the tourism industry hopes is a busy summer season.

The Tasman, a Luxury Collection Hotel, in Murray St will open its doors in December but potential guests can book now to secure a room.

Luxury Collection Hotels are part of Marriott International and prices start at around $400 a night for a standard room. A presidential Aurora Suite will set you back $5000 a night.

The Tasman, in Hobart’s parliament Square, is in a high tourist traffic area - just steps from the famous Salamanca Markets, St David’s Park and the vibrant waterfront of Sullivan’s Cove.

It offers 152 rooms which include original artworks from local artists, fireplaces and island baths.

“We are overjoyed to be opening bookings for The Tasman and cannot wait to unveil a truly unique hotel that has been years in the making,” general manager Stephen Morahan said.

“We look forward to welcoming our first guests to explore the captivating character of the hotel, designed to be the perfect base for experiencing the epicurean highlights of Hobart as well as the wilderness of the island beyond.

“Whether travelling from near or afar, we want to create a quintessentially Tasmanian experience as much for visitors as for the locals who help make The Tasman the unique destination it is.”

The heritage-listed building was originally erected in the 1840s but also contains an 1940s Art Deco building and the new glass ensconced Pavilion building.

The Tasman’s signature restaurant Peppina is led by renowned Tasmanian chef, Massimo Mele.

The hotel also has conference facilities.

The Tasman will be the first Australian showcase of the Luxury Collection brand, a global network of nearly 120 hotels and resorts by Marriott International.

To book go to www.thetasmanhobart.com to make a reservation for stays from January 4.

The Tasman will open extra bookings for dates in December closer to the official opening.
