Hobart City Council approves a smaller, interim Salamanca Market

After more than three months out of action, Hobart’s iconic Salamanca Market could be set for an early comeback – but in a modified form.

SALAMANCA Market could return in a smaller capacity, after a meeting last night.

Hobart City Council decided the market could return as soon as next month under a modified format, to comply with public gathering restrictions.

TOP TOURIST STRIP NEEDS SOME LOCAL LOVE

The council also endorsed a temporary site fee for stallholders who wished to participate in a smaller, interim market.

SALAMANCA MARKET TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED

An expression of interest issued to all Salamanca market stallholders last week identified about 140 stallholders interested in trading on a temporary, smaller market footprint.

A location and start date for an interim market has not been finalised, but it is proposed to be held on Salamanca Place.

STALLHOLDERS THREATEN TO SUE FOR $500,000

Hobart’s iconic market was shut down in March in response to coronavirus restrictions.
