THE Hobart City Council has been warned of impending legal action if it shuts down or suspends the popular Salamanca Market.

The future of the market is up in the air amid coronavirus fears.

Long time market stallholder Simon Manche sent an email to all elected members last night which said there was no reason to shut down the market.

“If you decide to close/suspend the market, there will definitely be a class-action lawsuit pursuing loss of earnings for the period in question,” he wrote.

“You will not have a leg to stand on and I suggest that this will be in the region of up to $500,000 per market, maybe more.

“If HCC staff have a problem working at the market that is fine, the market can proceed without them.

“If some stall holders prefer not to trade they can receive a refund, I’m sure casuals will relish the opportunity to trade in their places.

“If the public wants to stay away, that is a risk stall holders will have to accept.

“I strongly suggest that you take this seriously.”

Alderman Marti Zucco labelled the email “selfish” and not considerate of the overall situation.

“This is appalling – threats like this are like the outrageous shoppers in supermarkets,” he said.

“My personal business is suffering from a vast number of cancellations, but so are many others most likely far more than me.

“If and when the professionals and experts after consultation decide to either cancel the market or other HCC events elected members have an obligation to act.”

A decision on the future of the market is expected to be made later today.
