Gates open for new Hanging Garden Green Grocer

Small producers whose livelihoods have taken a huge hit will be able to sell their delicious homegrown goods at a new local green grocer from today. OPENING TIMES, LOCATION + STALLS >

What are the coronavirus restrictions in Tasmania?

SOME of Tassie’s best small producers are ready to showcase their products at today’s In The Hanging Garden Green Grocer launch.

Among the eager stallholders, Bruny Island Cheese Co. founder Nick Haddow said there was plenty to look forward to.

“This is so exciting, not just for us because we’ve had our livelihoods cut back and we haven’t had access to our public for weeks and weeks,” he said.

“But also for people who have been staying at home waiting for something like this.”

He said he felt “lucky” to join the 12 to 14 stallholders through the hard time.

“We don’t have our cellar door on Bruny Island anymore, we don’t have our shop in Salamanca anymore, all of our restaurant customers have dried up because they’ve had to close their doors,” he said.

HANGING GARDEN GREEN GROCER TO OPEN WEEKLY FROM MAY 20

Curator Jo Cook said the grocer consisted of a core group of permanent fresh fruit and vegetable stallholders, with another stallholder group rotating and changing.

She said she hoped the new venture would continue beyond COVID-19 with more producers welcome.

“We’re very open to anyone who’s interested,” she said.
