Wait, have we been saying Chupa Chups wrong this whole time?

"Why would you tell me this?! Nope. I am choosing to pretend I never saw this," someone wrote after hearing the 'correct' pronunciation.

Have we been saying Chupa Chups wrong this whole time

They're everyone's favourite lollipops - but apparently, we might have been pronouncing them wrong this entire time.

Chupa Chups were originally created in Spain, and so the proper Spanish pronunciation of the name is 'Chewpa Chewps' (listen here).

This comes as a surprise to many Aussies who pronounce them as 'Chupper Chupps.'

According to the official US website, they're also pronounced 'Chewpa Chewps' in the States, but the official word from the Australian Chupa Chups website is that they're pronounced 'Chupper Chupps' over here.

Phew!

But that hasn't stopped people down under from getting confused about the 'correct' pronunciation.

Is it Choopa Choops in Australia?!

Over on TikTok, one creator sent the platform into a frenzy when he declared that we should all say it like the Spanish.

"This is an emergency, I just found out that in other countries including Spain where the brand is actually from, it's pronounced 'Choopa Choops'," Money Mitch told his followers in a now-viral clip.

"Not 'Chupper Chups','Choopa Choops' and that's not going to work for me," he said jokingly.

"Yeah nah, I'm not doing that," someone replied.

"I beg your FINEST pardon?" a second asked, while a third wrote, "I could've gone the rest of my life not knowing that."

"Why would you tell me this?! Nope. I am choosing to pretend I never saw this," another quipped.

Then many agreed that they were going to 'refuse' to change the way they say the brand's name.

One person added, "This is as relevant as UNO telling us we can't stack Draw Fours."

You do you!

Reaching out to my team in the Kidspot office, it seems like a few of us have been saying it the Spanish and American way this whole time.

"British English and American English have slight differences in pronunciation. Because I learnt American pronunciation from a young age, I say 'Chewpa Chewps'," said Clara.

"I say 'Chewpa Chewps' too," said El. "I guess I must have heard it in American movies and it just stuck. People always laugh at me when I say it, though."

But rest assured because, like we said, the official word from the Australian team is that it's pronounced 'Chupper Chupps' in Australia.

So you do you!
