'I bought it because it's cute, what is it though?': Kmart item baffles

No one can seem to agree on what the mysterious decor item is meant to be used for. What do you think it is?

Kmart is in their dupe era

Kmart has left many shoppers confused with its latest addition to its homewares range - a terrazzo-style 'Wave Object'.

Launched at the end of 2023 for $5 but now on clearance for just $2.50, the item has been flying off the shelves despite no one actually knowing what it's meant to be.

So budget homeware enthusiasts have been using the object in unique ways, including a chic paperweight, a soap holder and even an avant-garde door stopper.

And of course, amongst all the genuine uses, people have also been sharing their hilarious theories about the item's real purpose.

The wavy decor enigma

A woman who purchased the item recently took to the Target, Kmart & BIG W Inspired, Decor & Hacks group to ask fellow shoppers if they knew what it was meant to be used for.

"I bought this because I thought it was cute and on sale... what is it though? Does anyone have it and can share some photos?" she wrote alongside photos of the item.

Her post was instantly flooded with responses, and the post now has over 200 comments.

"Holds bread and sausages when selling at a market for a BBQ, works well, have used them at our stall," one person joked, while another suggested another culinary use - "Definitely a soft shell taco holder."

Others said it was an abstract interpretation of a particular healthy chip...

"It's clearly a decorative Grain Wave chip," someone quipped. "Yep, definitely a Grain Wave made of resin," agreed another.

Then this person joked: "I'd use it for the spoon that my husband rinses and re-uses next to the sink."

A paintbrush, candle and toothbrush holder...

Meanwhile, other customers shared their creative interpretations.

"I use mine as a watercolour brush holder!" said one, "I use it to hold candles," shared another.

"It's a soap dish for me," a different fan wrote.

Then, a nail technician shared, "I use it to hold my liner brush when I apply builder gel."

"I put my toothbrush in between each grove," someone else wrote.

"Capture the essence of water"

However, a lot of commenters argued that it wasn't meant to be used for anything specific - and the decor item's purpose was exactly that, to be decorative.

"It’s just a decor item to put on a shelf or buffet or something," one user insisted.

"It’s actually just decor like a figure so can use it for whatever you want," added another.

The item description on the Kmart website reads: "Capture the essence of water with this stunning wave object, a mesmerising addition to elevate your home's decor."

So there you have it!

It's intended just to be pretty, but of course, its use is still open to interpretation!
