A LUXE new hotel is the latest drawcard for local business and leisure tourists to make themselves at home in the north.

Designed, built, owned and operated by Tasmanians, the $24 million Hotel Verge Launceston is set to bring a boutique accommodation experience to the region.

The 86-room hotel will open this month on the corner of Cimitiere and Tamar streets near the City Park and Albert Hall.

The “industrial luxe” development is a collaboration between the hotel operator Stay Tasmania Pty Ltd and Launceston City Council.

Stay Tasmania managing director Lyndon Jago said the council was “keen to promote the development” when they sold the land for construction.

“The council provided planning guidance to produce a product which I have no doubt will be acknowledged nationally as exceptional,” he said.

“We were able to promote the very best of Tasmania by using local architects, local builders and now we will provide a personalised Tasmanian experience for every guest.”

Designers have incorporated exposed concrete, natural timber, black joinery, brick and steel to reference the revitalised precinct’s early industrial heritage.

Set to open on September 16, amenities will include spacious rooms, free high-speed wi-fi, a gym and free on-site parking.

Hotel Verge general manager Kate Bucknell said the spot would include two meeting spaces housing up to 100 people.

“We are excited to see the Tasmanian element flow through into the in-house restaurant Diverge incorporating Tasmanian produce in its menu wherever possible,” she said.

Mrs Bucknell said Diverge would offer daily a la carte breakfast from September 17 ahead of a full-service offering later this year.

Visit Northern Tasmania CEO Chris Griffin said the “truly Tasmanian” hotel was “exactly the good news our community and visitor industry needs”.

“Verge, being centrally located to key venues, attractions and harvest market, makes for a great excuse to visit the North,” he said.

He said Verge was another incentive for locals to use their Make Yourself at Home travel vouchers.

Launceston Chamber of Commerce executive officer David Peach applauded the move to create employment opportunities during a tough time for the tourism industry.

He said the hotel was one of the “new and different experiences” locals could enjoy when deciding to holiday at home.
