THE renowned Three Capes Track has been recognised for setting new eco-friendly benchmarks after being named Tasmania’s development of the year during an awards ceremony in Hobart.

The Three Capes Track was presented with the Tasmanian Development of the Year award during the 2018 Property Council of Australia and Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards on Tuesday night.

The track, which has attracted more than 23,000 walkers since opening on the Tasman Peninsula in December 2015, defeated Hobart’s 40 Molle Street and the Universtiy of Tasmania’s Inveresk student apartments to the crown.

Managing director of project management company Rider Levett Bucknall, Ewen McDonald, said the development along the track set benchmarks for eco-tourism and sustainable construction.

“Being situated in a national park, many design choices were informed by the potential threat of bushfire, while maintaining an aesthetic that would complement the surrounding landscape,” he said.

Property Council Tasmania executive director Brian Wightman said the judges were impressed with how the buildings impacted minimally on the environment.

The track will now contest for the Brain and Poulter Award for Best Tourism and Leisure Development during the national awards in Sydney next Friday, while 40 Molle Street and the Inveresk apartments will also compete in the national awards.
