Nestled in the picturesque Northern Midlands, Evandale is a gem of a village that offers a tranquil retreat for anyone seeking a slice of Tasmania’s history, heritage and hospitality.
This charming town, just a 20-minute drive from Launceston, is often overlooked by tourists.
But in my opinion, it’s an unmissable destination that provides the perfect introduction to the heart of Tasmania.
My adventure begins at Charleston Cottage, an inviting bed-and-breakfast tucked just off the main street of Evandale.
A stunning example of Colonial-style architecture, the 1840s cottage exudes old-world charm while offering modern amenities for ultimate comfort.
Charleston Cottage is well-located, making it easy to stroll to Evandale’s main attractions, yet it still offers a peaceful, out-of-the-way feel.
The rooms are tastefully decorated with a mix of antique furnishings and contemporary touches. I stayed in the spacious “Duncan” suite, which sleeps up to two guests and features a delightful private courtyard for al fresco dining. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring.
The cosiness of the cottage is matched by the warmth of the town itself.
Evandale’s quiet streets are lined with heritage-listed buildings, and the village’s friendly community is always ready with a smile.
Charleston Cottage offers a wonderful base from which to explore, and its relaxed, homely, welcoming ambience makes it difficult to leave.
One of Evandale’s most popular culinary spots is the Clarendon Arms, a historic pub and restaurant with a reputation for serving delicious, locally sourced food in a relaxed, friendly environment. Stepping into the Clarendon Arms feels like stepping back in time, with its original stone walls, exposed beams, and vintage furnishings.
The atmosphere is warm, and the staff are both attentive and knowledgeable about the region’s food and wine.
The menu offers a blend of traditional pub fare with a modern twist, and I was lucky enough to sample several local specialties.
The Tasmanian lamb shanks, slow-cooked to perfection and served with seasonal vegetables, were a standout, as was the freshly caught Tasmanian salmon.
To accompany my meal, I enjoyed a glass of Broad Arrow pinot gris from the Tamar Valley – one of the state’s premier wine regions.
Evandale is known for its vibrant market. Held every Sunday, the market is a must-visit for anyone in the area, and it perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Evandale – community-oriented, laid-back, and bursting with local flavour.
The market is held on the picturesque village green, with local vendors offering
everything from fresh produce and homemade preserves to handmade crafts and vintage treasures. It’s the ideal spot for anyone wanting to pick up a memento of their visit, whether that’s a jar of locally produced honey, a hand-carved wooden ornament, or a selection of hand-knitted scarfs and mittens.
I spent a couple of hours wandering through the stalls, coffee in hand, chatting with the friendly stallholders, and taking in the sights and sounds of the market.
It’s an experience that truly highlights the warmth and character of Evandale.
It’s also an ideal destination to cross off some Christmas shopping, for your loved ones or for yourself. I certainly had my eye on a set of Royal Doulton 101 Dalmatians, if anyone is struggling to buy me a gift.
Of course, the market is also a great place to stock up on ingredients for a picnic or to grab a bite to eat. From locally made pastries to fresh fruit and vegetables, there’s plenty to keep you fuelled during your explorations.
Evandale may be small, but it is brimming with character and charm.
A stay at Charleston Cottage, a hearty meal at the Clarendon Arms, and a visit to the Evandale Market are just the beginning of what this delightful town has to offer.
Whether you’re in search of history, food, or simply a relaxing weekend in a peaceful setting, Evandale is sure to leave you wanting to return.
