WHEN you’re not sure what you’re in the mood for but you need a quick snack that really satisfies, you can’t go wrong with chicken wings. Patrick Gee finds five of the best local spots where you’re welcome to wing it.
Ruckus Fried Chicken
1/1 Risdon Rd, New Town
Choose from six coatings for your wings at Ruckus Fried Chicken (four whole arms for $9.50). The most popular is the original seasoning, however, the maple syrup option has a cult following of its own. Flavouring options also include chipotle, hot, salt and vinegar and herbs. The herbs are foraged fresh and dehydrated by the owners. The chicken is sourced fresh from Nichols Poultry and the store is fully licensed and open until 9pm.
The Texas Pantry
100A Main Rd, Moonah
The hot, crispy and flavoursome wings at the Texas Pantry are made with big Tasmanian chicken wings using a traditional recipe from the US. With 15 house-made sauces to choose from to top your wings, any flavour craving can be satisfied. The wings are fried in corn flour and an array of secret spices until nice and crispy and are gluten-free. You can get an entree of 4-6 wings for $15 or a main served with chips and coleslaw for $25.
The Winston
381 Elizabeth St, Hobart
Plenty of research went in to perfecting the traditional Buffalo Wings at The Winston. Made using Nichols Poultry’s free-range chicken, they are as authentic, crispy and tasty as they come. The wings are perfect for any group with servings of 5, 10, 20 or 40 wings available. For the very tough and brave, the Atomic wings (3 for $8) might be for you. They are dressed with Carolina Reaper sauce, which made from some of the hottest chillies in the world.
The Talbot Hotel
131 New Town Rd, New Town
With tang, a bit of spice and served on a bed of high-quality, super crunchy chips, the Buffalo Chicken Wings ($10) at the Talbot Hotel are the ultimate bar snack. With eight or nine wings in each serve, the dish can be enjoyed solo or shared. The affordable dish also comes with sour cream and sweet chilli sauce. Pairing the wings with a side of beer battered onion rings ($9) is a popular option.
The Brunswick Hotel
67 Liverpool St, Hobart
The folks at the Brunswick have just brought back the popular all-you-can eat wings on Tuesday nights for $15. In the Grill area at the back of the Brunswick, you can challenge the current record of 55 full wings — segmented into 110 pieces — consumed by a single human in one sitting. Or for a slightly more civilised option, you can enjoy a plate of the Buffalo Chicken Wings served with blue cheese sauce for $14. These are a feature of the menu at The Brunswick Hotel.
