Grab a bag on the go or enjoy on the side of a serve of fresh fish – hot chips are a favourite winter warming feed among Tasmanians. The best of the best will be extra crunchy, soft and fluffy inside and not too oily.

Legs ‘N’ Breasts Salamanca

2 Montpelier Retreat, Salamanca, Hobart

From daylight pedestrians to the early morning revellers, Legs ‘N’ Breast’s secret salt and special gravy draw people to the store at all hours of the day and night for their freshly cooked chips. These chips are cooked fresh on the spot in cookers set aside for only chips. A medium bag will feed a hungry pair for $4.80.

Flippers Fish and Chips

1 Constitution Wharf, Hobart

These A-grade Tasmanian chips are the highest quality available. Cooked fresh to order in clean oil, you won’t see these Flippers favourites getting dry in a bain-marie. Season them yourself from the store’s salt selection and fill up on crispy chips from $4.50.

Fish Frenzy

Elizabeth Street Pier, Sullivans Cove, Hobart

Freshness, quality and simplicity are key components of Fish Frenzy’s crowd-pleasing chips. The chips are made from high-grade Tasmanian potatoes, twice cooked in unblended pure cottonseed oil to minimise oil consumption, and served with plain salt. A small serve ($6) is enough to fill two people with a serve of Fish Frenzy’s fresh fish.

Dunalley Fish Market

11 Fulham Rd, Dunalley

There’s no great secret to great chips say the crew at Dunalley Fish Market. Just quality potatoes cooked in good oil, served and eaten hot and fresh. The team treat their customers like mates basically throwing the chips in free with fish, or $3 for a one-person serve.

K&D Snack Bar

103 Melville St, Hobart

Need to take a break from a long day of tool hunting? Pull up a seat in the K&D Snack Bar and order yourself some chips. The crinkle cut chips hold together well in the fryer so they can be fried longer, making them crunchier outside and soft inside. A small bag goes for $4 and is most commonly ordered with chicken salt.
