NEGOTIATIONS between Glenorchy City Council and Mona are set to begin over lease arrangements for the Berriedale caravan park site.
Mona held a presentation this week for residents and stakeholders.
The proposed Mona Accommodation Berriedale, or MOAB, development on the site of the former caravan park next to Mona will provide affordable accommodation for up to 50,000 visitors a year.
It will feature retro caravans, themed sleeping pods, camping and campervan sites, communal cooking and administration buildings.
It will have “zones of experience”, including a quiet zone and area for social campers.
Mona business manager Mark Wilsdon said public consultation would end on Monday, then talks on a long-term lease could begin, followed by a development application.
“We want to continue to embrace the community and we want to see particularly this beautiful waterfront area around Mona and the surrounding bays right from Wilkinsons Point at GASP opened up for locals and visitors, for sport, recreation business and cultural activities,” Mr Wilsdon said.
Glenorchy Mayor Kristie Johnston said the council had been working on a masterplan for the Berriedale foreshore.
“At the beginning of next year we need to release it for community consultation before finalising the masterplan,” Ald Johnston said.
“From the initial consultation we did, the community wanted more foreshore access so long-term that might be included in the masterplan, but it’s too early to say that.”
Mona owner David Walsh wrote about his vision in the information given to council.
“Our particular focus is to keep fees down, so that a broader segment of the community can stay than at Mona. We would also like visitors that have no desire to visit Mona, but like the idea of some quality camping or vanning,” Mr Walsh wrote.
